  2. I think it would have mattered little. It sounded like she wanted it and
that's all there was to it. So she got it and took the risk.

I know quite a few GS riders who have shed their 1100/1150GS for F650GS type
bikes as they are simply better on the dirt. Their dicks didnt fall off
admitting that the smaller bike was better for the purpose either. The
1200GS is a different generation entirely.

(Who got rid of his R1100GS mainly cause it was too big to be easily
    managable on dirt)

If you are talking about Zebee... then ok... but what Zebee said wasn't
really motorcycling advice... it was lifestyle philosphy (disguised as
    bad motorcycling advice).

Fair enough... maybe we might have to agree to disagree on this one :)

No problem on an 1150GS though; they've all got that servo-ABS thingy
    haven't they?

I think that she was right to go and see if it was too big for her, and
she had the right to get a bike that she thought she could handle.

That she came unstuck so soon is definitely bad news, but it wasn't
    inevitable.

I think she would have been more sensible to have chosen differently,
but I'm the poster child for only buying bikes that mug you and drag you
out the door, not the "sensible" option, and that's just what she did.

She took the chance, she lost the gamble. THere's a million people in
cars who think to buy *any* bike would be shatteringly stupid, so it's
really just a question of degree about how stupid she might be. I am
sad she was hurt, I hope she gets up and gets back into riding.

Hey you guys, all the advice was good if taken in context. Suzie is
very stubborn and made her own decision to buy the bike regardless of
eveyone telling her not to. All your advice really helped. Thankyou to
    everyone.

Did you know that that can shut off if it gets mud in it?
    (Either did BMW, apparently ...)

Hi Zebee, Thankyou very much for all your advice. It really helped
to get comments from your perspective. I hope Suzie will decide not to
sell her Honda 125 dirt bike, and to stick with gymnastics, if she's
still able after her leg mends. There is some doubt about whether her
leg would take that much stress for quite a while after it's healed as
her sport is very stressfull on her body. I did buy a new bike jacket
for her birthday, but I'm buying her a portable tv instead, so she can
use it while she's in hospital. About a week they say. The BMW will be
either repaired or written off, so her Dad won't lose much. Only the
excess, about $2000. Yes they did insure it before she rode it home.
    Thank goodness.

Yes, that's a real bummer. But it's amazing what heaps of calcium and
good physio can do :) She's fit, it makes a huge difference to recovery
as long as she doesn't push it. I hope she heals well and gets back to
    doing what she enjoys.

She'll find riding a bike will be difficult for a while too. She'll
probably have to start with a pushbike....
THere's something to be said for bike shops after all!

That is desert racing, not 'off road'. It's a different catagory being
high speed open stuff. The problem is that 'off road' is tight, knarly
    low speed stuff.

Do people who don't live in Victoria use the term 'off road' differently
or something coz the meaning of it doesn't seem to be registering :)

ON the other hand, what I thought she wanted was "adventure touring"
    which could be either.

    Adventure Touring?

For a woman that is hitching a ride to the coffee shop on the back of a GS.
