BMW 1979 R65 - Values?

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by BenelliMaster, Nov 3, 2004.

  1. Hi group,

    I have a lead on a 1979 black R65 with 36,732 miles on her.

This is what is wrong with the bike.

It has gone down, clutch handle is broken, gas pitcock is broken, inst
cover needs to be replaced, needs one signal light in the back, seat
is riped have no idea if this is old, left side cover is gone, two of
the fins on the left head is bent, right side engine cove shows signs
of going down (road markings) but did not brake thru.

Electrical system is working, engine is turning over with no sound of
    any thing wrong inside.

You could start the bike up and drive it away after replacing the plug
on the left side and the pitcock.

I was thinking it may be worth $300.00 if that, still have to think
    about parts replacements.

    Any comments would be nice.

  2. In the bay area, I think it might fetch more if it was well maintained
up until a recent crash. YMMV, but I'd guess it's got $300 or better in
    salvage value.

Depends on the overall shape such as condition of paint, etc. Overall,
I'd say it's a steal at 300 if the general condition is ok. IMO, the
    pulled engine is worth more.

It's really hard to say. You could probably pick up a decent roadworthy
copy for about 3 grand, check out ebay or cycletrader.com. Then figure out
how much your're going to spend getting this one roadworthy. A lot will
depend on how much of the work you can do yourself. My gut tells me you'd
be better off getting something a bit more complete unless you're pretty
good around machinery and aren't in any kind of hurry to get on the road

  5. This will be the difficult bit - the 45/65 series used different
instruments to the other old boxers, and only the R80ST has the same
units. They're scarce and expensive when you do find them. DAMHIKIJK,OK?

I300 bucks is a steal, but remember that this is the early R65 - the
later 1981-on models with brembo brakes, lighter weight, and 5bhp more
    and *much* nicer.

I'd do it up as an urban rat. I wouldn't bother trying to restore it
    properly.
