Blue down pipes.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by steve auvache, Oct 26, 2003.

  1. Having seen just how little the XV1100 weighs I have added it to my
shopping list and have come across one on the web.

The piccy shows about a foot of blue down pipes. Now when I were a lad
this was considered to be the result of a hot, thus lean, engine. A
touch of blue was ok but yards of it were a no no. Has it changed?

BMW boxers often have blue tubes - but I think they are designed to run
lean to get the cat up to operating temp.

  3. It always used to be because they used single-walled headers.

probably still is the reason - I quite like the discoloured tubes as they
do not show the dirt as much as shiny silver ones

Don't suppose it's possible they are coloured pipes is it?

Could be I suppose but that is a bit academic now as I have decided it
is grossly overpriced and I am not going near it.

XV1100's seem to be climbing in price, and most of the other Virago's
    are following suit:-(

    I hadn't noticed tbh.

The 2nd hand custom market is not an easy one to put a finger on as
there is not really much like for like type comparison which can be made
across manufacturers and the low volume only exacerbates this.

It don't help either that custom bikes tend to be very much loved by
their owners which means they often have unrealistically high opinions
of the value of their machines.

It's even louder if you match *all* the shiny bits with anodised parts

For some strange reason I have as far as Virago's go, there seems to
be less on the s/h market and it seems that even the dealers have
noticed a shortage and priced there machines accordingly:-(

The worst I have seen from a dealer has been a XV535 with 0 miles on
it and his asking price was £500 above the list price.

I had noticed that there are not as many 535 ads as there used to be,
which is odd because the things are as common as dirt really.

    I wonder why?

It could be because they have finally stopped making them, something
to do with the new emission regulations.

It used to be that when they stopped making something it became
    obsolescent and the price fell.

OTOH if the old ones are noisy and dirty to the point of offending the
tree huggers enough to get them banned then I can see the attraction

Dunno, but the Gixxer's[1] appears to be blue as far as the exhaust
valve, i.e. just in front of the end can, which seems to suggest that
    it doesn't mean there's a problem.

[1] Not just mine, but any others I've looked at.
