  1. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Simon Atkinson
When I spoke[1] to a chap at IDNet (after the Great Demon Usenet Debacle
of '08) he assured me that they don't throttle, shape, manipulate, tweak
or otherwise **** about with the data stream at all. I believe him.

[1] Imagine that! Spoke! On a telephone and everything! In English!

  2. They throttle excessive downloads. They don't traffic shape.

  3. They have quite aggressive traffic shaping.

  6. And in an English accent, too! I agree, it's amazing.

And you don't have to press fifteen telephone buttons, like a bloody
trained laboratory rat, to get to the person in the first place.

    I *like* IDnet.

As a lowly 2MB user, I didn't think 500MB was fairly generous one evening
when I downloaded a Linux ISO and found my connection was then fucked.

You might get a letter from them shortly, as we did on Saturday,
explaining that you'll get the upgrade to 10Mb, FOC.

Can't you do the free upgrade to 10MB?

Yes, and indeed that happened just the other night.

Still, at 750MB I better not download too many Linux distros or whatever.

I don't find it a particular hardship to do my downloading in the 18
hours of the day that they don't apply a download limit.

And to make sure I don't go over it, my torrent client is set to
artificially slowdown between 4pm and 9pm so it can't download too
    much.

Looking at downloads-only it's 14 hours in my book, but OK, you have a
    point.
Well that's just being too practical. I guess I could kick off any
significantly large downloads after 9pm and get the machine to shutdown
afterwards. I don't think Firefox can do that, but I'm sure I could run
    wget followed by shutdown.

It also has the advantage that it means torrents don't swamp my
wireless network during evenings when we're likely to want to watch
something on one of the media centres.

What kind of speeds are you getting with it? I've checked and mine
is only getting just under 6Mbits which is around the same I used
to get on plain ol' ADSL.

Maybe I need to start tweaking shit. It's set to Auto mode so will
(read: should) drop back to ADSL if it can't connect on ADSL2+, and
I'm wondering if that's what is happening. I can't see anything in
the status as to which mode it's connecting in though.

For which bit in particular? Because it won't work to schedule a
shutdown if I do a download with firefox and don't know how long it will
    take.

I tend to go by the estimated download time and
    "shutdown -h <minutes to end of DL + some>"
Saves leccy on the nighttime torrent action.

wget ;shutdown should work fine as well though.
