Having been charged the annual subscription three months in a row by
Demon after having upgrading me to ADSL2+ without asking me (my modem
not being 2+ compatible), I'm fed up with them

Being in a Be supported area, are they as good an ISP as any ?

They were bought by O2 a while back and I'm not aware of any drop in
    quality of service.

It's Telefonica and I doubt they have a long term strategy much different
from the rest. Be nice if they did of course.

Went over to them in late June. They will supply you with an ADSL2 router.

Their customer service bods are quite keen. I'm getting a good speed but
intermittent outages. It's taken them a while to admit there is something
wrong on their end. I've had 2 BT Openreach visits, which I refused to pay
for in advance as I had already eliminated a fault in the house wiring.

The BT guys were pretty rubbish. Especially the second one who admitted it
was the first time he had done this type of visit.

They are currently monitoring the line and according to the router stats,
messing with the line speed & noise ratios.

Considering I'm only paying for the £13.50 value package, I'm quite
impressed with the effort they are making to get things right.

Sign up via Quidco for a cash rebate of £40. Incidentally, if you have an
O2 phone then sign up with them as it is the same company and you'll get a
    discount. Again Quidco bribe available.

You'll need to find a usenet server and be* will charge extra for email
    addresses.

    Already got a 2+ router
This is for a business line
The line tester says I can get 8 megs - I'm looking at the middle
    package
    Good tip - cheers
    Not at work ...

I'm actually quite satisfied with Virgin at home, could be cheaper, but
    the service is OK
I made myself ISP independent years ago, no problem there

I used to. Then the throttling of nntp, torrents, iplayer etc came.

The Standard O2/Be modem, the BeBox, is a rebadged Speedtouch. If that
doesn't tell you all you need to know, you either haven't had a
Speedtouch before or I'm jealous of your technical ignorance.

I think the problem with the BeBox is heat-related. Regardless, I had an
old Netgear sitting around that was better than the Be-supplied modem
anyway, so I reverted to using that.

Modem aside, Be are fucking great.

I've tried a Netgear and SMC router. Same issue. I think it is down to
their server. On weekdays, frequent disconnects around 1700, again at 2100
and then 0000. Worst time is from 2300 on a Friday pm until about 0030 on
the Saturday, just as people come home from the pub and stream porn...

I asked the BT guys about cooling in the exchange. They admitted it is
    inadequate.

We've got a Be line in the office, and have put 'em in a couple of
customers. And I'd use 'em again, quite happily. However, we buy 'em
through www.cerberusnetworks.co.uk - a bit more cash, but a truly superb
extra layer of support on top. For business use, it's worth every penny
    of that.
It's a Thomson pile of steaming shit. Actually, to be accurate, it's a
pile of sizzling, smoking shit, since it's best used as a space heater.
Who uses ISP mail or news servers anyway? They're all shit, and you need
to change your email address every time you change provider.

    ^^ wot he said.
Yep. And since it gives out so damn much of it, problems are inevitable.

  17. Virgin do not throttle those things (on cable anyway). In fact they are
quite unusual as all ISP's apply traffic shaping - whether they admit it
or not - but Virgin seem pretty good and it's not noticeable.

Indeed not. 20M here is pretty much 20M all day no matter what I'm doing.

It has revealed my router as a POS though.

I was aware of that, but I hadn't used a Speedtouch in many years, so
thought I'd give it a go. Also, it was syncing a good couple of Mb
    quicker than my Linksys.
