Bloody bike bits thieves

  1. Some sod nicked the pillion footpeg from Number One Son's Honda 250
Super Dream, while it was parked outside his university halls of
    residence.

Why? I mean, OK, obviously, some scooterboi or someone out there needs a
pillion peg, so they unbolt one from someone's bike and take it. But
    still WHY??

Trouble is, it holds on the right-hand silencer as well. Anyway, I told
him to get to a bike shop, a cycle shop, anything, and just get a bolt
put in to stop the exhaust disassembling. Which he did.

Rode back home on the 250 for the weekend. Right, hunt through the Big
Boxes Of Buggered Bike Bits and lo and behold! Here's a Honda 400 Four
right-hand pillion peg. And, wonder of wonders, not only does it fit,
but it fits *perfectly*. Even the cast-in locating tab has a slot on the
250 into which it can, er, locate.

    Same part, in fact. Obviously.

Somehow there's an enormous sense of achievement in doing a fix that
costs absolutely nowt, and which is perfect.

A guy I went to sixth form with took great pride in telling everyone how he
would get new wiper blades by driving down to the local retail park, and
nicking a set off any other Fiesta he could find...

Its a 250 Dream, it will have fallen off.Cheeky monkey. I bolted it on myself when I fitted the new exhaust.

    <Pause>

OK, and I bolted it on properly, right? :)

I was just amused that a part for a bike from a different generation
bolted straight on. There's more commonality of parts between
different Japanese bikes than people think, even today.

Eh? I thought it was a SuperDream? Produced from around 1978, yes? And
the 400F was discontinued in 1977, IIRC. Not _exactly_ a different
    generation.

Oh yes, your dates are correct, but trust me: the bikes really were a
different generation. The 400F belonged to the era of the SOHC fours,
and was developed from the CB350 of the early 1970s. The Super Dream
was one of the first of the new generation of multi-valve Hondas.
Originally launched as the Dream in 1977. As a 400, it was the 400F's
    replacement.

In the UK, the last 400Fs went out in 1978, but I think production
    stopped in 1977. The latest 400F registration I've seen is 1979 on a V
    plate.
