The problem you've got now (once it's fixed) is every time you ride
that bike, there'll be this little niggling doubt at the back of your
mind. "Is it safe to tip it into this 90mph right-hander, or should I
stop & check for oil on the tyre first?". "Should I take the car to
this important meeting in case the bike doesn't make it?". "If the
shaft overheats & explodes due to lack of oil, will it take my foot
    off?" etc etc.

And all the time there'll be this little Lozzoesque voice sniggering in
the background. And every time you see a black notebook, you'll come
out in a cold sweat. But don't have nightmares, do sleep tight.

is this really what owning a BMW is all about? what happened to German

German manufacturers have been trading on reputation rather than
quality for a couple of decades now. Which isn't to say they don't
still make some quality kit, but it's rarely better than the
competition these days, & often worse.

I'd prefer to wait for the all-new Triumph Trophy. I always rated my
1200 above the K1100LT in handling, performance and braking (ABS
aside). As a big touring bike, though, the BMW nailed it with the
shaft drive, the better fairing, and (above all) fuel consumption.

If Triumph can cure those issues with the new bike (it has a shaft,
for starters), then I could well be tempted. The old 1200 engine was
an utter stonker: shame they never really developed it.

I'd agree that Triumph has produced some great bikes and also that BMW
motorbikes haven't been anything special since around 1993. Then again BMW
cars also lost their mojo, as did Merc.

The engineering design has been right up there, 2 and 4 wheels. Think
R1200S, K1300GT, telelever front ends, Gen3 ABS and so on. You just wouldn't
    want to buy one.

I reckon it's more like everyone else caught up to them in quality, so
they had to add a lot more complexity that often goes wrong in order to
    maintain their value added.

Over engineered and too highly strung - same as German kit in WW2.

Indeed. 8-10 year old R1150GS, before the stupid brakes were invented.

Seem vass has the "something getting hot and no room for expansion so
blow the seal mode of FD failure".

Apparently, progress on the R1200GS was to leave off the final drive
    breather fitted to earlier models.

    Those servo brakes?

Platy's bruv David bought one of those.

Yes. EVO shit. Timo had them too. Guess what happened.

I've no idea why they added the complexity, apart from as someone else
said, trying to appeal to idiots who want gadgets on their bikes.

My bike has non-servo brakes and my MOT tester is very impressed with their
stopping power. It's still on the original hoses after 11 years, just
getting new fluid every other year. ABS is fitted but has only ever come on
on a wet ramp departing a ferry.

Gen 2 BMW ABS is excellent. Hell, the Gen 1 for 1988 values was outstanding.
Have they abandoned the Evil Evo yet?

EVO has gone. EVO II lives on. Apparently it works. Importantly, you still
have unassisted brakes if the pump fails. As Timo found, with EVO, if the
pump fails you have NO brakes.

Mine is ABS2. It had a 2-3 year holiday when it didn't work. It's been
working for a year now. Apart from clear the fault with a GS911 device I've
done nothing to it. I assume it was a bad connection somewhere that got
better. Fault code said "piston failure".

Nope, they used some mega star actor to convince people they made good
    bikes for world travel.

And now many people think it is the only bike for travel.
