I didn't need one but wanted one. I've actually surprised myself at how
    useful it's been too.

    not cheap then.

TBH, although I'm sure they're lovely kitchens, given that the prime
motivation for re-doing the kitchen is to help sell the house, I'll go
    with something cheaper.

Though not as cheap-ass as MFI or B&Q...

probably going to buy an older one first, and then if I like it,
    upgrade to an S4R.

Unless, of course, someone suddenly offers me a job paying about 15K
more than I'm currently on, in which case I might over-rule my Aprilia
ruling and buy a Tuono Racing.

The Blane may have got a better deal, but when I popped into the local
showroom, they were talking "between 6 and 12 grand" furniture costs.
Installation and appliances would have been extra. I'm now paying about 6
grand for a kitchen, fully fitted with appliances, wood worktop, belfast
    sink, blah blah

I'd have gone for it with HJ, had I not been having the soundproofing done
    (which I now have)
I'm planning to stay put for a while at least, but not so long that the
    kitchen's started to fall apart
Magnet stuff looks OK, but fundamentally they're all MDF boxes. I hear Only
    Bad Things about Moben.

Magnet are who I was thinking of using, not least because there's a
showroom within walking distance of my house, making it less of a chore
to go round and break some heads if there's a problem.
Ditto - some past experience with them too - arrogant cunts.

"belfast sink"? <googles> Well I never...why on earth would one want
something as old fashioned as that in one's house?

    'cos they're trendy[1] and Kenyon's a fucking fashion-victim.

[1] not as trendy as having an /un/-fitted kitchen, mind you...

    Dingly ding.

It's all mdf/chipboard etc unless you're paying for real wood, which is
    much much more expensive.

IMHO, it's all in the quality fo who fits it - a badly fitted good
qwuality unit kitchen still can look shit 2 years on. I hear good
things about the quality of Ikea kitchens, just get a good fitter. Plus
a whole load chepaer than the "all in one" service offered by likes of
    B&Q, Moben etc.

I get to see a lot of trendy houses in Clapham and Battersea when I've
helping out with other half's cat business. Belfast sinks seem
distinctly passe now and unfitted kitchens are becoming much more
common. I think they'll get to look un-modish very quickly though.

The Blane got a great deal. The Blane rocks.
    Well, when you say "all"...
Thos cunts will try to hard-sell you with the old "I can give you 50%
off if you sign right now" gambit. Why they bother trying that shit I
    don't know.

oh, exactly, and it's for this reason I wouldn't actually consider
    having an un-fitted kitchen.

Unfortunately, we had a not-particularly-good kitchen fitten
    not-particularly-well.
I was actually impressed with the quality of Ikea kitchen stuff
compared to the rest of their range.

It's also "in keeping" with my "period property", don't forget (we'll
disregard the wok-burner and stainless steel splashback)
Not-that-oddly enough I did look into those - Habitat and John Lewis do a
range. You need a fucking huge kitchen for it to make sense, IMO - and my
corners are all a bit wonky, which makes for funny gaps or stacks of wasted
    space.

Could probably have got it done cheaper organising things myself, but when it
boiled down to it I really CBA to project-manage my own kitchen installation.
I have enough mong-herding to deal with at work.

The chap who's fitting it has been round and seems to be a reasonable bloke,
with a "been in the trade for years" countenance about him. We shall see ..

They seem a bastard to keep clean too. Natural wood surfaces look great
when they're new, but particularly around sinks they discolour and warp
fast unless you're obsessive about re-oiling them.

I had an unfitted kitchen 1994-1999 so it's a bit old hat.

It has to be said that particular house also had coal fires as the only
form of heat and round pin sockets [1].

[1] Could probably count the wiring as a potential source of heat.

I put a cheapish Ikea kichen in other half's old flat - cost about a
grand all told for everything including flooring (not including
installation, obviously, did that myself). Looked good and I thought
the quality was not bad at all, for the money. Not notably worse than
the 7-grand kitchen one mate had installed in his place last year.
