One is planning to spend a day meandering from Baden Baden to
Friedrichshafen on the Bodensee. Are there any particularly nice roads
or is it just a question of looking at the map and following one's
    nose?

Not that I can remember - so maybe it was in a pub!
Seriously - naa; I don't think I've met any UKRMers except Jackie,
    once, at the Black Horse.
To be remedied on the 6th September, God willing.
Will u be there or will you be gallivanting round continental Europe?

We're back the day before, but I'm otherwise engaged on the Saturday
    [1].

    [1] Three-line whip for the choir I'm in [2]

[2] which in turn necessitated applying (successfully) for a rain
cheque for our planned wedding anniversary dinner the same day

They're are *lots* of nice roads in that area. Try and intersect the
lumpy bits as early as possible. Oh, and get a ride in a Zeppelin.

  8. So do I. And I'm not allowed any (simple carbs innit).

    Yah boo sucks to sugar-mongness.

As Timo says, the B500 is the popular north-south route. Traffic is very
heavy at times, they have heavily enforced speed limits on sections. The
scenery is spectacular though, in good weather.

It is possible to find alternatives. When travelling in the reverse
direction I went up the K6594 to Titisee, rather than the southern section
of the B500. This was very scenic and quiet, going through a lovely gorge.
More by luck than judgement as I went the wrong way after crossing the
Rhine and the Garmin chose it.

So, go by your nose or a Garmin mystery tour and you might see some nice
sights and avoid the tourist throngs.

Sounds promising, but I can't find that road.

That's using road numbers from MS Autoroute: it runs from the southern end
of Schluchsee to Waldshut on the CH border via Brenden and Berau. K4989,
    K6594 then L157.

Google maps seems to concur on road numbers
    http://snipurl.com/3bpag [www_google_co_uk]

The road is possibly to far SW for your route, I just gave it as an example
of what can be found if you go into "stumbletours" mode.

The narrow, twisty gorge is the L157 bit at the southern end. It was a huge
relief after travelling from Lucerne to Waldshut in 30C heat.

    I understand this.

However I've now down graded you from 'seems like a nice geeky bloke'

  16. Hmm.. Broccoli I can just about tolerate (steamed until al-dente
anyway). Ditto sprouts (Cheryl is growing some in the veg plot at
    home).

Cabbage (as far as I'm concerned) can go straight from the veg plot to
the compost bin (unless pickled - I don't mind pickled cabbage since it
doesn't taste like cabbage at all).

Make broccoli soup and add a load of stilton to make it taste nicer. The
other benefit is that you don't lose any of the water soluble nutrients.

Gotcha. I was only looking at the Titisee.
As you say, probably too far out of our way - this time.

  19. Only one *slight* flaw with that - I can't stand Stilton. I prefer my
    cheese to be unmoldy..
Other than the Stilton is sounds like a plan. I'll have a scavenge for
    some recipes.
