    G'day all,

It's been a long time since I stuck my head in the group and said G'day.
I've been reading aus.moto on and off since before '98 and really enjoy the
group.(actually found an old post of mine from back then on Google.) Shit
that was nearly 6 years ago. :-o

    Anyway...

I'm very close to updating my bike and I've just had a look at the NSW RTA
website to see if the white on black plates I wanted are still available.

I hope there is some mistake - the web site said 2x2 white on black
motorcycle number plates are $100 per year! WTF? Have I had my head in a
hole and missed the price hike? I did a search on google through past
aus.moto posts and didn't come up with anything. If I remember correctly
they used to be about $150 once off, and once they are on the bike that's
    it.

    Any ideas/recent experiences anyone?

    Cheers,

    Drew.

Yes, this is RTA profiteering at it's best.

They slipped it through about 2 months ago. There was no press release
and it just appeared on the website.

You will note that almost all of the psuedo custom plates now have a
cheaper upfront price but also a recurring $100 per year additional
    fee.

Welcome to the "new", rinancially driver RTA.

Not content with overcharging for road tax, erm registration, and
filling the coffers with revenue from speeding fines and the like,
they now charge bucketloads more for little "extras" which used to be
    much more reasonable.

Yes, custom number plates now attract a yearly fee, included on your
    registration papers.

The $100 annual fee is one of the cheaper options - the fancy new
coloured plates with personalised plus content run to $470 a year!

You can, apparently, get yellow personalised plates for motorbikes
    only for a $174 one-off fee.

Don'tcha just _love_ the wonderful governments we have in Australia?

I much prefer they take money off suckers who think a coloured plate is
worth paying money for, than us hard-working battlers who just want to
travel at a speed they choose :)

Not to worry; they can do both.
After all, it is about the money isn't it ?

    Thanks for the speedy replies.

I did some further reading on the website:

Even car personalised plates carry an annual fee now. Crikey! They obviously
aren't silly enough to make the charges retrospective. The number of friends
and family I know with personalised plates is huge. I can think of at least
10 plates just off the top of my head. Obviously the RTA saw how popular
personalised plates have become over the past 10+ years and decided to "cash
    in" on future sales.

On the motorcycle front. Black on yellow "personalised" plates are the only
rego plates in NSW (including cars) that don't quote an annual fee. :) Kewl
(Better not speak too loud else they get ideas!) So I went an ordered that
plate I've wanted for years. Shame about the white on black though.

Personalised plates are for wankers? There's plenty out there so the RTA
figured they'd make their wallets lighter for them. :)

    Cheers all,

    Drew.

I have been told by the RTA that the charges are not retrospective but they
could not confirm what the policy was when you upgrade your car or bike and
transfer your personalised plate you payed an upfront $154 to your new
vehicle that they will start charging you an annual fee.

I have a Black bike so the white on black looks nicer than the black on
    yellow, only reason I changed.

  8. I've got white on Blacks on one of my bikes, those plates have been on
something like 8 bikes over the years. I've never had to pay another "new"
plate fee, all I've ever paid is a transfer fee of $40 or so, higher now.
If they were to hit me for a new plate fee or an annual fee if transfrred to
another vehicle, I'd be handing them in and asking for a set of standard
    yellow/blacks.

We were considering a set of B/W on our Subaru Forester also, till we found
out about the new annual fees. Been around for more than two months also
