Bl**dy 'L - this seems very cheap for an RE-5?

  1. Because an engine-driven pump will meter the oil more accurately tht you
can. And in the case of Suzukis, will deliver the two-stroke oil
directly to the bearings. How are you going to do that with pre-mix?
Have you *never* put your bike in a false neutral?
Simplicity is great. I like simplicity. I have a very simple low-powered
Ducati which utterly rocks. But you are confusing simplicity with
    primitiveness.

  2. The CB750 handled poorly, agreed. So did the Wing.

However, the CB750 comprehensively kicked the British arse until it
hurt. And handling defects are reasonably simply and cheaply corrected -
a change of bars, rear shocks and some heavier fork oil makes a
surprising difference. And I've owned Honda fours, which I'll wager you
    haven't.

Rather easier than trying to engineer an ancient parallel twin so it
doesn't leak oil, shake itself to bits and blow up.

  3. *Yawn*

I remember them saying this 30 years ago about CB400s, Suzuki GTs,
Yamaha RDs and the rest. And the answer has turned out to be: *lots*.

  4. The Japanese *understood* customer satisfaction and built a superb parts
    operation.

    You are *appallingly* ignorant.

Anton Gijsen came up with the following;:
Last time I saw a Bantam being actually used on the road as intended was ..
    er .. dunno. Maybe 1983

I see lots of small, old jap bikes, sheeit I even ran (until it got nicked)
a 22 year (A reg) old DT 125 LC, which had a superb engine.

  6. also in due course the Japanese sorted the handling too, took a bit longer,
I grant you and there are still inexplicable dogs. By this time the British
industry had basically folded up. The modern incarnation of Triumph is
doing deservedly well, it seems, but how much success would it have had if
it had simply revived the old models?

I tried my best to break the RS but it refused to die. The only bits I've
bought for it was some plugs, points and a spare piston kit which was never
    used.

I really wouldn't want to sell it in the state its currently in. I took it
to Frankfurt and back in a weekend and then just dumped it in the garage
and haven't touched it since. If you want a restoration project then fine
but its not really in a road-worthy state.
As it is about 100 quid or so.
I'd recommend an RD500 with a SS stage 3 tune of course.

    I still miss that bike.

    snips
First I ever saw would have been red or perhaps green-liveried 125s
ridden by GPO [General Post Office- predecessor of Royal Mail and BT]
    telegram boys in the 1950s.

Certainly saw red GPO machines, always with leg-guards, and seem to
remember a pale green GPO livery as well. Always wondered how many the
GPO took, and to what extent that helped BSA survive at that stage.
