It didn't help that the M5 was closed northbound when I was trying to go to
work. Fatal accident, they tell me. So, everything was diverted onto the
A38, which wasn't moving at all.

Good excuse to take to the hills, except everyone else had had the same
idea. Wotton was parked, Dursley wasn't too bad but no-one wants to go to
Dursley anyway. Nice blast out to Uley, past Nympsfield and up onto Selsley
Common. On the other side of the Common, going down Selsley Hill into
Stroud, eeek! Trucks! Hordes of 'em!

I got past most of them, untill the road became too narrow. Selsley Hill is
steep, narrow, twisty, and in the middle of a village, and this morning was
thick with the smell of cooking brakes. The truck in front of me was
creaking and shuddering down the hill at about 2MPH, with oncoming cars
backing down the hill away from him. It occurred to me that it could be
interesting if he lost it. Then I figured out that the truck /behind/ me
was having the same problems. Double eek.

Well, it didn't happen. Stroud was the usual mess, and the rest of the
journey was routine. By the time I got to work, I was absolutely sodden
with sweat. The Trophy is a big lump and puts out lots of heat, especially
noticeable at a standstill. Not much better at speed - lots of wind but I'm
nice and cosy behind the fairing.

I really must figure out how to remove these blanking wossnames from the
    holes in the fairing.

A soldier recently back from Iraq crashed his car into the back of a truck
and lost his life. My boss set off for work from Chepstow at 6:40 and
didn't make it in until 10:20.
    Cheeky sod.
That's what I did, and yes...erm...smashing nicey mate.
    Brilliant isn't it :)

40mph between Dursley->Uley and from Uley up the hill! That road was
    national speed limit yesterday. Grrrrr.

I think I'll try dissolving them with neat's-foot oil first.

I could see something was amiss when I joined the A38 at Cambridge and
the northbound side was a stationary queue. As I passed the queues on
the M5 I could see loads of cars with their doors left open and
fuckwits wandering around the carriageway - that would have made
    interesting filtering.

I originally posted a reply to this about 10 hours ago using the BETA
Google groups but it hasn't appeared although I bet it arrives as soon
as I press send on this one...

Dursley has one redeeming feature, the Old Spot.
Have you been over to Minchampton common? Similar roads up and down
that one there is one in particular that I think is called Bear Hill
    but I'm not certain.

Get used to it, the limits seem to be dropping all over Glos. at the
moment. The A38 towards Falfield seems to get lower limits all the
time. I know the 40 limit is being extended from Cambridge down to
Gossington Bridge at some point as well.

Stone->Falfield is NSL, 90-95 this arvo. Falfield is 40 and so am I, used
to be NSL but I knew some of the people who gave their lives for the 40
limit. Plus the outlaws live there.

South of Falfield is 50 (110 on the overtakes - this bike is a Progress
Monster) till after Whitfield, NSL up Milbury Heath, then 50 and 40
    approaching Grovesend.

It does. You trundle up within about 2' of them before they notice, then
you sit there looking unimpressed while they do the Panic Dance...

Sorry I wasn't clear, by 'towards' I meant 'in the direction of' not
'as you get near to'. It's places like Berkeley Heath that seem to have
been created from nowhere complete with their new shiny 50 signs.
I tend not to use the A38 south of Falfield[1] unless it's a fuel day
or I'm cycling and those new traffic lights just north of Alveston
don't encourage me to want to go that way much either.

[1] If I remember rightly you are in Thornbury so I'm guessing you
don't use the A38 north of Falfield much.

Oh yes, there's a really nice zig-zag up onto the common, and as long as you
watch out for the cows free grazing, it's a great laugh :)
