I blame the producteurs. We have some Gigondas rosé which is 15.7%. I
didn't think that kind of strength was even possible. Do they have mutant
    yeast?

A friend produce a Médoc (Château Planquette, Saint-Yzan-de-Médoc) from
    bio grapes. The 2003 is 15%, the 2005 14.5%.
He says it is normal, you just have to let fewer grapes reach maturity.

It is rather when a producer must use reverse osmosis to concentrate the
wine and reach 12.5% that is not normal...

I was amused by the programme about HMS Bulwark the othere day. On exercises
off the coast of Bangladesh, where all waste goes in the river, and the boat
produces its own water by RO... Captain's holding up an RO tube that's a
delightful shit brown colour - "These normally last us around a month. This
one was entirely clogged in 3 hours".

Was I, or the article, talking about addiction? I have no problem with
the fact that my 'bottle-a-night' drinking is somewhat above UK
govmnt's recommendation, but since when did that become a binge?

The worst thing about the article is that it fails to fully identify
the cause. Confusingly, it says "Drinking a bottle of wine or five
pints of beer in an evening instead of over the course of a week gives
you a big waist", but thaen it goes on top say "the pattern of
drinking rather than the total amount of alcohol consumed has a
greater effect on waist size. "

So if I drink this much regularly, does it make me more likely to
develop a beer belly or not?

    [snip]

Sheesh, I have as few as five pints tonight, it won't be worth the
    schlep up to town.

    Would you?
I guess a bottle of red lasts me 3 days, sometimes 4. Medicinal dontcha
    know.
If I tan it all in a night I feel shit the next day.

I drink every day, probably too much, but I don't drink strong stuff or
    spirits at all.

C'mon, you know exactly what that means.

The pattern of drinking large amounts over very short time periods,
rather than the equivalent amount over a long time period.

Even I understood it, and I'm stupid.

Talking of which, did you see the instructions of the barrel?

You didn't understand my question, though. The article is unclear
about the effect of a pattern of drinking larger amounts regularly. Is
it just the occasional nature of the 'binge' or simply the amount
consumed in a short timeframe that's the significant factor. It
    doesn't say.
