Well yes but I see the Americans have decided to celebrate outside the White House and our daft PM has made some pompous and ill advised remark. I wonder what they'll all be saying when the attacks recommence as a result of his death? At some point Al Qaeda will try to avenge the death of their leader.
Just what I was thinking. It's a time for quiet reflection and an opportunity for people of all faiths and creeds to come together and determine that, whilst regrettable that it had to come to this, it is the best outcome for all. Or an opportunity for a significant number to piss off anyone that isn't a white American.
Fucking *ding*. I'm actually disgusted by what I'm seeing on the tele this morning. Yes, the guy was evil, should have been caught, should have been tried. But to celebrate anyone's death by having a street party is utterly abominable as far as I'm concerned. As soon as those tv pictures make it across to the Arab world, you know exactly what's going to happen. And Mr Cameron certainly isn't speaking for me.
Leadership may be an intangible trait, but it has very tangible results. The names of superior leaders are famous because of what they've done. The attacks of 9/11 took audacity, planning, and true leadership. Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind. His chief subordinates have been picked off one by one. Certainly, other leaders will crop up, just as evil men have always cropped up. But taking him out is a good thing. Perhaps he will become a martyr, but better that than an inspirational living leader. FWIW, I think it's unconscionable that Bush went through 2 terms without getting the guy. On March 13, 2002, he said, "I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him , to be honest with you. I truly am not that concerned about him." Instead, he put us in a useless war against the man who tried to assassinate his father.
It's the fact that it is senseless that gets me. The Yanks deplore it when radical Muslims celebrate killing American soldiers / civilians but it's alright for them to do the same when their "enemy" is killed. Well exactly. One day the bloke will learn to engage brain before opening his mouth. Quite how he hasn't got into far bigger trouble as a result of his "announcements" I do not know.
Yeah, it's a bit senseless, but I think it's more akin to the cheering on VE Day than cheering the death of an enemy. No one cheered when any other Al Qaeda were killed, nor any Afghanis or Iraqis. Bin Laden was a symbol as much as anything, and his death allows the US to declare victory and pull out.
I'm not sure, giving him a headshot is really a god thing. I think if they wanted to get a real effect, they should have gone the Saddam route. Parade him around, shave his beard and hair and put him on trial. This is what western civilisation is all about. Instead, they went the Mossad/Call of Duty route, which will make him (apart from an insprirational leader) a martyr. I think it's now best to avoid any terrorist hotspots (like Ground Zero, London City Centre etc.) as you can count on retalliation in the foreseeable future....
well, hopefully we'll get back the £650 million of 'aid' we just gave Pakistan when it's found they are complicit in helping him hide there. -- Nige, 'That's shot the fox' Eunos Roadster (for summer) Grand Cherokee (for winter)
Ironic that he should be killed on 2 May. -- des 'Israeli Arabs have more political rights than any other Arabs in the Middle East, including their compatriats in the Palestinian Authority' (Jack Schwartz) <http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/>
Well, to begin with 'Al Queda' is a non-existent 'bogeyman'. Second, I don't think that ben Laden ever admitted to the attacks on 11/9. People who kill in the name of Allah don't generally have a problem with telling the world what they've done. I'm also very sceptical of the Americans' claim that 'he was given the chance to surrender'. No way could the US have envisioned putting the guy on trial. So it looks like a targeted assassination. Fair enough. Just as long as the world doesn't twist its panties the _next_ time a bad person has to be taken out, eh? 'cos that would be like, holding one country to a different standard than another, wouldn't it? And no one would do that...
