Bill Walker really is a Convict

  1. No, because .10 cents is one-tenth of a cent. What would have been so
hard about "10 cents", or even "ten cents"? You could have even said
"$0.10", which while awkward, would have at least been correct.

  2. On Mon, 25 Apr 2005 00:27:05 -0500, "Brian Walker"
Yes, but the end result was .104 DOLLARS, not cents. The "50" had
units of dollars, and the "479.64" was a unitless factor, so the
answer ".104" should have had units of dollars as well.

I see where you're coming from, but your equation was still wrong.
Two correct variations would have been:

    $50 today / 479.64 = .10 dollars in 1967

    -or-

    $50 today / 479.64 = 10 cents in 1967

Whether it's a case of getting the incorrect answer, or getting the
right answer and expressing it incorrectly, both you and Andrew were
still off by a factor of 100. According to you, Andrew's error made
him a "fucking dumbass" - what does your error of an equal magnitude
    make you?

  3. "$50 / 479.64 = 10 cents" is a perfectly true statement (ignoring the
rounding error). Just because it combines the division and the
dollars-to-cents conversion into one statement doesn't make it
    incorrect.

Likewise, "2 pounds / 32 = 1 ounce" would be correct as well. If you
have two pounds of something and divide it into thirty-two equal
portions, each portion will be one ounce.
Your *numbers* may have been correct, but you fucked up the units, so
    it's still wrong.

While it's true that 50 divided by 479.64 is equal to .104, it should
have been .104 DOLLARS, since the first number had units of dollars
and the other had no units. By leaving the numbers the same and
putting "cents" where it should have said "dollars", you made your
answer incorrect by a factor of 100.

    That's like saying "500 pounds / 5 = 100 ounces". The *numbers* part
is right (500/5=100), but the *units* part, and therefore the whole
    answer, is still wrong.

  4. Hey, you admit that you were "jacked up" in expressing your end
result. - that's the only point I was trying to make.

And to your credit, the difference between ten cents and a tenth of a
cent is a lot more subtle than the difference between $23,982 and
    $239.82.

    Scott Gardner, Apr 25, 2005

  5. If by "dumbing down", you mean "being consistent with your units",
then yes, I guess you will.

$50 today / 479.64 ~= .10 would have worked, the dollar sign being
assumed through the whole of the equation.
Er, sorry. You're two decimal places off, just like Andrew was. The
difference is, Andrew said "I made a mistake" and you are clinging to
your error like a poop turd on a butt hair. These little things speak
    to character.

You left off the part i wrote about "...support, join and only complain
when you lose something.". like I mentioned the other day, when you
attributed part of what Morgan wrote to me (by deleteing his name), you
might want to take some quoting lessons from BJayKana, a web tv'er.
Would you consider it deragoratory if I stated "Don would rather curse
the dark than light a single candle"?

On my newsreader your comment was one single line that seemed to extend
to infinity. I suspect it had something to do with the way you posted or
copied it. Chasing your quote was a PITA. You might check that out. Ask
Bjay for help if it is beyond your skills.

I had discussed with Bill that a pic of Bill accepting the badge would make
for a good ebay auction to raise money for some worthy MC cause, be it MSF,
    MRF, TMRA, ABATE or whatever.

I'm pointing out that you made a mistake and refuse to admit it. That
only makes me a dumbass because you don't have the character to do
anything other than insult someone who points out an error.
Convince me that you actually thought Andrew meant $23,000. After
all, he already admitted his mistake, as soon as it was pointed out.
You don't have enough character to do so. Do you think that mistakes
are based on someone knowing what you meant to say when you say the
wrong thing? How well did that work for you in school?
    Prove it.
It isn't hard to spend 9/10ths of a cent somewhere, though, is it? So
how does that have any relevance to your mistake?
That makes no sense. Stating a mistake in different terms does not
create a new mistake, or prove intent. You've got to do better than
that. So far, I have a pretty good idea who the better man is here.

Like I said a while back, Ralph sells his ribs at the Ithaca
Farmer's Market during the summer, which is a great place to
spend and hour or two. Maybe we could get Dement to leave the
smog of the big city, pick up Jimmy R. and join you, Ari, Steve,
me and anyone else who's interested.
    (apology accepted in advance.)
And while you're at it, maybe even read something that's written
by credible folks who don't have a history of lying and a clear
    incentive to lie!

True but last I checked the State department scum
bags had changed things so that AMERICAN CITIZENS
must have a passport to get back into the U.S. of
    A. What I want to know is WHY they think the can
make changes that ought be made in congress. It
was unilateral and unconstitutional. Burn the
bastards out and shoot them when they come out of
    their hidey holes!

  14. I've never travelled to Mexico or Canada, so I'm ignorant of the way
things used to be. If Americans didn't have to present a passport to
get back into the country, how did they prove their U.S. citizenship
to be re-admitted? Was a driver's license sufficient? Aren't those
fairly easy to fake (or at least harder than a U.S. passport)?

Pretty much it was DL for years between Canada and
Mexico. Then you had to have the BC...it's getting
stupid. If I had Bill Gates money I'd go to Canada
with nothing buy my DL, BC and then come back. Oh
what a fun fight that would be, I just can't
afford the lawyers to fight that one for me.

  17. I was wondering about that, too. I've have calipers bind up and not
release when I let go of the lever, and one time I had a front brake
that was dragging slightly until it heated up the fluid in the piston,
causing it to drag more and more until it finally became noticable,
but I've never had a brake spontaneously lock itself up.

I've done it before with a Birth Certificate, and even once with just a
voter's registration card and driver's license. Now we carry the
passports whenver we go to Canada or Mexico.
