I hadn't realised you'd been riding for longer than me - don't know
    why, really.

But yeah, although I'd dicked around for years on l-plates, I finally
took some lessons (5 or 6) and did my test in summer 96, when it was
reasonably warm - wore helmet and gloves OK, but that was it for
"proper" kit - IIRC, I had a denim jacket, and a pair of cat boots as
the rest of my "protective" clothing. I didn't own a leather jacket
until about 9 months after passing my test - I bought it because it
looked cool (it was a Dainese thing) and because I was going european
touring. This turned out to be a mistake, because in summer 97 in the
south of France and Tuscany it was *way* to hot to wear, and ended up
bungeed to the back of the bike for a couple of thousand miles.

    I wouldn't deny it for a second.

There's always more to learn and plenty of room for improvement.

For you, maybe. In 1994 I had a full licence and was a riding god.
    Knew it all.

I was thinking along the same lines. FWIW, I didn't really have a
choice with kit - it was January and although the roads were dry there
was ice in the gutter in places (e.g where I did the turn-in-the-road).

As I already had a bike jacket +boots of some description, they went
on, along with jeans and some waterproof overtrousers (for warmth, all
    5 seconds of it).

I did my bike test in summer 1995 and it pissed down.

I don't suppose you see many expensive cars Up Norf, so we'll have to
forgive you. It was a Porsche, and if you think the Cayenne S was
quick, you want to try the Cayenne Turbo for size. I've only driven
the S, but I've heard that the Turbo is seriously fast. It would be,
with the engine from the 911 Turbo in it.

Probably because I'm slower than you are, and because surely only a
know-nothing newbie would have a brown motorcycle.

ugly as ****, mind. I'd actually go for the Touareg 5.0 V10 turbo
diesel instead, if I were in that market.

Ah - I can't see why I'd ever be in that market, tbh.

me neither. Big, fast quasi-offroaders just seem a little pointless.
