Hurrah for common sense. I was wondering if I was the only one who'd
been stupid on a bike before.

Have you never ridden without a crash helmet?
Why do you assume that one of the kids didn't do a Saturday job for a
few years to pay for the bike?

I know I should be surprised by some of the responses to this thread
    but I'm not.

Before, during and after. As you well know.

I had a ball riding without one in Sweden this summer. Obviously it's
against the law, but there was no plod in sight for the whole two weeks and
it was fucking HOT. Not the best excuse, but it was the best I could think
    of at the time.
There's a perception these days that ALL kids on bikes must've nicked 'em. I
know of one, but the bikes aren't always nicked, just never insured and he's
not got a license. Come to think of it, he's not a kid either at 20 years
    old.

    *ding*.

My parents didn't even know I had a bike for the first year. My mum would've
had kittens coz she hated bikes after her cousin flew through (and out the
other side) of a furniture removal van when he was a yoof. It brought his
yoof to an abrupt end mind. My brother went through the same thing 4 years
later (no, not the fucking van) when he reached riding age. We called them
    the "Hide and Ride" years.

Even when we were both in our 40's, we didn't go to mum's on bikes and she
was blissfully ignorant of our ownership.

  6. My mother didn't know about the DT50 until she got the call from the
    hospital.

    'Your daughter's crashed her bike'
    'What bike?'

I understand she expressed the view that if I wasn't seriously injured
I would be as soon as she'd got her hands on me :)

  7. Age 18 for me, so yes.

(That was my summer's hop- and apple-picking money, that was.)

    Aye. SL125 for 125 quid. Shame I didn't wait until I was 17 until I
rode it, like wot I promised.

I'm sure most of us who started riding at 16 paid for our own bikes by
doing Saturday jobs or paper rounds. The biggest reason I started an
apprenticeship rather than stay on at school was to fund my need for a
proper motorbike as soon as I was 17 and nothing much has changed
    since.

  14. If the reason was for the safety of the public I could understand. But
the bit about the thieves may hurt themselves and that the polices
course of action it determined by if they will get sued by the
perpetrators of a crime. The system that generates that kind of reaction
    has lost its direction.
With reference to my comments above, I don't.

It's only the Sun that says that though - no police quotation
    suggesting that it's their policy.
Sure, but the reason given was that it was for the safety of all road
    users, which seems quite reasonable.

I sometimes wonder why he still lives there, although he'd probably
see just as many conspiracies anywhere.

Not about anyone being sued there isn't. It's only the victims' mother
    who says so

"Pauline Nolan, from Droylsden, Greater Manchester, said officers told
her they could not pursue the offenders in case they fell off and sued
    them. "

Well of course we shouldn't doubt that for a second.
