Looking at that list of bikes, I'm damn sure engine braking will never be a worry, nor will being in the right gear to pull out of a corner. I'm not one to get evangelical about the ineffectiveness of gear indicators, but I'm not bothered about whether or not I have one on my bike because I'd ignore it anyway. Going for top gear +1 has never bothered me and I still do it after 30 years on bikes. Having a gear indicator wouldn't put me off buying a bike, but I wouldn't go out of my way to fit one aftermarket either. I've had them on two of my previous bikes and in one case it was absolutely useless because Suzuki never made a GT750 that had 8 gears only when it rained, and the other I rarely looked at when I had a GSX750EFE. Btw, engines are for moving, brakes are for slowing down and stopping. -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer Fireblade 929 (For sale) CBR600F-W trackbike SR250 SpazzTrakka, SR250 wivva topbox TS250C RD400F, somewhere I see a bright new future, where chickens can cross the road with no fear of having their motives questioned

I've found that the most fun is to be had when you're in a gear too low to be of much use and caning the tits off whatever bike it is -- Lozzo Versys 650 Tourer Fireblade 929 (For sale) CBR600F-W trackbike SR250 SpazzTrakka, SR250 wivva topbox TS250C RD400F, somewhere I see a bright new future, where chickens can cross the road with no fear of having their motives questioned
I find it useful in 1st & 2nd & then again top. Having just read the instruction, i fear it will be ebayed anyway.... -- Nige, BMW K1200S Range Rover Vogue Aprilia RSV Mille
Indeed. Are you Dave Corden by any chance ? I was dawdling along behind a car and I got bollocked for a) Climbing over the car in front when there was no overtake on. b) Being in the wrong gear for when the overtake presented itself. We debated the laziness of having a litrebike, and it not really mattering what gear you were in, it was going to take off like a scalded cat, but there was no escape. For snappy overtakes, you need to be coming onto the power, so you need to be looking at your revs, not thinking what gear you were in. I'm late into this thread, but you shouldn't need a gear readout. The only time it would be handy is when i'm already in top and I try to shift (again) into top. Paul.
Agreed. It's worse on the Tiger though than the 12R, as the Triumph sounds like it's being thrashed constantly when it isn't. Paul.

I ride like that. Not many don't - but it's not as if it loses any time - it's just a re- assuring life of the lever as you toodle along. That's what I do. I hope this doesn't mean None of us can...
Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, typed Of course it would. But if I wasn't expecting it to and dialled in a first gear set-off, there's the potential to look silly. And that would *never* do. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - "He's hopeless, but he's honest" I have already made the greatest contribution to the fight against climate change that I can make: I have decided not to breed. Heh. Once in a while the LE refuses to go into first. Pulling away in second with only 8 BHP can be interesting.
