In case of such emergency: squeeze front brake lever, simultaneously cog
it down one and release the clutch while easing the brake lever - by
which time you've found that the brakes have done their job and your
speed has decreased to the desired level.

I bet you think: "I'm doing 55mph here, and I really want to be doing
35mph - I'll just wind it off for 1.2 seconds and then I'll be doing 35,
just right". The rest of us just dab the brakes, of course.
    I reckon you do.

But if you had a gear indicator you'd make a point of looking at it
first? Tell me, is that more or less effort than just feeling the bike
or looking at the rev counter?
You seem to be implying you'd do so when slowing heavily for a
    junction, so why not?

And on the other matter of hunting for top gear; on every bike, and
car, I've ever owned I very quickly get used to what the revs/speedo
reading will be in top gear, and sometimes the one down too, so a
quick glance will tell me if I'm in top or not.

The only exception is the new motah, which with the DSG box has to
have a gear indicator. Consequently I haven't a clue what the revs are
at any given speed. Which just goes to show that they make you lazy,
and it would seem that you've become so used to them that you can't
    seem to work without them.

This I can understand, or at least consider plausible.
This I can't. If you're in too high a gear, you're in too high a gear.
Knowing what number it is, is not going to help.

I'll try another example: swoopy NSL road, you come up to a 75 degree
corner, to the right, no traffic, you can see right through the bend.
What gear do you want to be in? What if you'd been following a car? Or
    a truck?

I don't know what gear I'd be in, but I'd trust that I'd be in the
    right one.
It wasn't intended as such: I was trying to establish whereabouts in
the MSM procedure it would occur.
Oh, it's a fair cop, you've got me bang to rights, and no mistake.

I concede every point of your robust counter-argument.

Perhaps if my keyboard was fitted with a "there" indicator it could
have prevented such a catastrophically embarrassing incident.

    Or not.

Kenyon had one on his GSXR600. When I rode it, I found it incredibly
annoying that there was a lag time between changing gear and the
    display changing.

    agree on all points.

On the KTM particularly, I am constantly looking for a non-existant
6th gear, but I've never been caught out by being in two high a gear.

I knew it was time to get rid of the SV when I spent an entire trip to
    France looking for 7th gear.

Take it from me, as someone who rides a bike which is not only small and
not hugely grunty but has all of its power squeezed in a band about 1500
revs wide at the top of the range - the only thing that matters is being
in the right gear, not which number it is. I couldn't tell you from one
    moment to the next.

I look at this face every single morning in the mirror. Mere
transportation-choice is unlikely to make me worry.

Just noticed my sort of appropriate homophone error.
Some bikes seem much worse for this than others - for instance, I was
constantly (like every couple of minutes) looking for a 6th gear on my
    B12.

On others, such as my TRX, it rarely seemed to matter what gear it was
    in.

Unlike Vince, the poison dwarf, late of this parish, who complained
that his newly-acquired 9R wouldn't go above about 165mph all the way
down here. Champ promptly took it out and proved that it would... as
long as you remember to use six gears, not five.

there's nothing I hear about that twat that doesn't stack up further
evidence that he's the biggest **** from ukrm I've had the misfortune
    to meet.

Many years ago, I had a GSX550 with a gear indicator. That was the only
real use I had for it. More recently, I had a GL1200 with an OD light that
served the same function, but was kind of irritating, because the Wing spent
a large part of its time in top gear.

I never had the displeasure of meeting him, so I'm afraid you and I
still top the cunty list as far as I'm concerned.

Of course they bloody do. The only exception tends to be top gear
cruising because you know what revs you should be doing for your usual
speed in that gear. The rest of the time you just know when you need to
change up or down - unless you're making a point of tracking the
changes, you'll not know which gear you're in at any given time.

Never mind occasionally, I do this all the time. I just change up until
it won't go no more. Changing down is the same, unless it's just for
cornering when I just go down until I think it's about right, depending on
    how I'm riding.
