Did Bikesafe over in Devizes on Sunday with SO. I'd done it back in 2000,
when it first came out, whilst still in Scotland but SO had never done one.

Was a pretty good day, with a very good turnout. Consisted of several
presentations of safer riding etc, with police assessed ride along the way.
I do enjoy the Red Sea effect of having a fully loaded police bike running
behind me. As before, the guys were perfectly happy with folks 'making
progress' as long as one wasn't taking the piss completely.

Final Wiltshire one is 9 Oct if anyone's interested - google for details cos
    I cba rummaging.

On the way back to the centre after mine, I was going along a country
A-road, and sped up a bit to overtake a car. Checked my mirrors afterwards
and saw the police rider right up my arse. Wasn't sure of exactly what the
speed limit was, but she'd said she'd drop back if I was going to quick, so
I assumed it was OK. It was only when we got back that she told me I'd been
doing 70 in a 40, but she hadn't dropped back because 'we were running a bit
    late'.

Amazing value for 25 quid (including lunch). If you haven't done one yet, do
it. An enjoyable day out and you might just learn something.

Out of curiosity, how did you find Devizes?
My parent company is based there, and I reckon it's the arsehole end of the
back of beyond behind the Devils rectum.

  4. Just followed the A342 and there it was...

    Oh, that's what you meant....

Tbh, I've only ever ridden through it and that's not often either, so
I've not really thought one way or another about it. It does tend to
have cheaper housing out that direction, so there may be a reason for
that. It does have some very nice Victorian houses though. Guess it's
like anywhere - good and bad.

Clever them Police, teach folk how to ride their bikes faster around bends
etc so there will be more to catch speeding.

I'd quite like to do a Bikesafe thing and see what they make of my 20
years of untutored riding style - get quite baitey is my guess.

Shame I'm working that weekend, my parents live in Devizes I could have
done the "You've got visitors thing".

I didn't mean to make the original post sound so "..and I'd show them a
    thing or two".

I still have the odd close shave, usually of my own making, it's pretty
rare that 'blind cunts' pull out in front of me but I would be very
interested in what they teach about spotting hazards, road positioning
    and hazard prioritisation.

On your comment: do what they teach match my own self-taught rules, am I
missing something blindingly obvious? It'd be enlightening for that
    alone.

The emphasis is on safety, not on observation.

  11. Usually by means of observation, either the riders, or by putting
yourself in a position where you can be best seen. In general, this
means looking through bends by being on the outside of the lane, and
approaching a junction take a position where blind drivers get the
earliest possible warning of you being there, ie position yourself as
far as possible from the junction in your own lane. Where two or more
hazards are coincident, eg a joining road half way round a bend, then
position yourself to minimise the worst case risk until you've passed
that hazard and then re-adhjust for the next. Coming back to the
junction on a bend, if the bend were a left hander and the junction
were from the left, then for the bend I'd be on the outside BUT for the
junction I'd be towards the middle of the road - I'd stay towards the
middle, compromising my visibility through the bend (possibly
moderating my speed too) until I was sure that there was no joining
traffic approaching the junction from the left, at which point I'd
regain a position maximising visibility through the bend.

Obviously, this is a generalisation and needs to be read with the
appropriate helath warning (all generalisations are generally wrong all
    of the time).

You didn't - but the point I was making is that you don't sacrifice safety
    to gain observation.
In other words you don't ride out in the other lane just because it gives
you a better view - you do it if it's safe, THEN it gives you a better view.

This wasn't really necessary considering what I wrote, but anyway - one step
    nearer to RSI eh? :)
