Late again, but I've just got to poke my nose in on this one.
I reckon that there is just one thing to say about old bikes.... they're
not as good as the new ones.
Must have had the best looking trumpy in Melb in the early 60's. Lots of
chrome - Vic Bogner paint job, made a set of upswept polished copper pipes -
bent them around the base of the rotary clothes line after heating them up
with a kero paint stripping torch. Did the motor up a bit - still woudn't go
and wouldn't handle. Used to get much satisfaction looking at myself in the
shop windows as I rode along.
Traded it in at Frank Mussetts - I'm dropping some big names here, and
aren't sure of the spelling, on a BMW R50S a very rare special bike, used to
buy aviation gas at a garage in Eliz. St., near St. Francis church. Used to
ride it at 100 mph with my good mate on the back- we survived that but I
nearly killed him in a car though.
Lots of memories there, and a few photos but don't need them; as twilight
shuts in on me, I still look forward and not back, and I'm doing it while I
can, and watch my younger mates fall by the wayside for whatever reason.
Am still, and have long been challenged to get a 916 \996,
but to do so would defy my good reasoning.
My TLR and GSXR1000 have more k's left in them, than I'll be able to ride,
and there's nothing out there that could offer me more. I reckon it's more
about: places you've been, things you've done, and people you've met. The
    bikes the tool.
I respect them, but, look on them like a stallion - great power, great
performance but drop your concentration and your on your ear. Wonder if I'll
walk away from them before that happens?

    You've inspired me.
I hope I too can learn one day to post such stirring and emotional prose
about my love of motorcycles, Johnno.

What next; are you gonna' regale us with tales about processed-cheese
you've eaten or potatoes you've peeled or something?

A friend of mine used to raise and break horses, mostly If we went horse
riding I rode this 'nice' mare or occaisaionlly the 'steady' gelding.
There was this stallion they owned... high spirited, fast and with huge
endurance (and yeah, a right handful at times, but things went right and
    wooo).

I used to dream about owning a horse like that :)

Saying 'look on them like a stallion' isn't an excuse for not having an
emotional response, if anything it should be the opposite!

You have my sympathy for having ridden as long as you have and not
finding a bike that inspired you :-/

I would've though it was Lowtec who had the surprised look seeing as he was
racing against a bike that wouldn't be invented until 4-or-so years after
    week-old blue-tank mach-iiis roamed the earth!
