I was doing routine maintenance and light repairs on army Minor
Travellers in 1978. I think they were still using them up until 1982.

Funnily enough I remember my dad once bringing a matt green traveller
home. It had a, IIRC, small roundel on the bonnet. That would have been
    about 1977.

But the factory had stopped building them in 1971.

My dad and I both ran Travellers when I was younger. We had a garage
filld with spare wings, doors, gearboxes and engines, all courtesy of
    the MOD :)
I know, but a fair few were built for the MOD from spares stock after
    that.

You state a valid point, Ben. IIRC, the 30mph limit was instituted as
yielding a "safe" stopping distance for cars when they were fitted
with rod-operated drum brakes. Consideration towards raising it to
40mph was made in the '80s when just about all cars had servo-assisted
discs and radial tyres. Then the "safety lobby" kicked in and now it
looks like 20mph in urban areas will be the norm.
    Naah. Just you.

Hmm... 100m to stop once brakes applied.

    therefore 300m thinking distance.

    140mph = 140x1609= 225,260metres per hour = 63 metres per second.

    300m/63 mps = 4.75 seconds.

Hmm... looks a bit slow, though not excessively so.

I love the noise that decent brakes make on ventilated disks.

I get the same end result using NLM (and assuming the same rate of
    deceleration) but I can't figure out where 7s @ 35m/s comes from.

Umm, I dunno maybe, I'm sure it's right. I think I are just being thick.

He's assumed deceleration of 1G which is where he gets 7s from (I assume)
but you can just use S=(v^2-u^2)/2a without doing any intermediate steps.
    s'what I did anyway.

  17. The GPO (as was) considered having Morris make them bespoke Moggy vans,
with all the major parts different-sized from standard, such was the
pilfering rate of spares. The idea was dropped when Morris gave them a
    costing on it.
The Army, eh? Cutting edge technology.

I was told that the MOD ordered the Minor with hardboard interiors, no
trim extras etc in the name of cost reduction. (this is in the era when a
heater, mirror and sun visor were optional extras)

Morris then took the standard interior out of the production line models,
replaced them with hardboard and charged the MOD extra for the time and
    materials.

AFAIR only Land Rover had a separate MOD production line.
