They had that here in NSW for 130 and over, but it got repealed. Who ever
actuall saw sense on that one I don't know, but I'm glad they got rid of it.
Probably too many mums n dads losing their licences or the magistrates were
sick of seeing the cases in court.

<sigh> They keep upping the ante so fast it's hard to keep up, you'd
think the NSW govt was broke or something

Back before 1992 the state limit was 100kph and exceeding the limit by
30+ was an automatic suspension. In 1992 the limits on several roads
were increased to 110kph, but the "state limit" remained at 100kph and
they changed the law so that specifically for 110kph zones you would cop
an automatic suspension at 130kph, not 140kph. A couple of years ago
the automatic suspension point was dropped from 30+ to 25+, so if the
above was applied to 110kph zones in the same way you would cop an
automatic suspension at 125kph. I don't know if this is the actual
case, but I presume it is. As far as speed detection goes, you'd be
most likely need to be doing 132kph or more in a 100 or 110 zone before
qualifying for the automatic suspension, probably more if you're nailed
by real cops and not a camera... a specific exception might be if you're
Uncle Bully, because you'd probably talk yourself into it.

Jenny Zimmer got done for 131 on the Hume near Benalla when we were coming
down for the GP about 1997, and it was only the 2km leeway that saved her
    from walking.

2 km leeway? It is my understanding that the 'leeway' is defined by
Australian Standards as 3 km/h for any speed under 100 and 1 km/h for every
10 kms over 100. eg, you have to be clocked at 109 to be booked for 105, and
139 to be booked for 133. Has that changed?

To tell the truth I can't remember. It may well have been 3 but it
    certainly wasn't 6.

Hmm. Leeway here is usually 10% + 2mph. So in a 30mph zone (built up
area and/or residential area) one has to be doing 35mph before one
gets an automatic fine + points.

40mph in a 30mph zone will get you three points on your license and a
£60 fine. Your licence can only hold 12 points. If you have only
held a 'full' licence for less than two years then you only have 6
    points before your license expires.

The police frown upon people doing over 90mph (144kmph) on motorways
but it's quite common to drive/ride between 70 (national speed limit -
112kmph) and 85 (136kmph) but sitings of people doing over that are
very regular. I got pulled for doing 124mph (199.5kmph) on a motorway
last year and got away with a telling off at the roadside without any
    fine or points.

Motorways are the UK's safest, and fastest roads.

  11. That the offender on this occasion was female is going to make the penalty
more lenient. A friend of mine (actually a copper eek gasp!!) was doing his
masters in criminal law, when he pointed out to me that women get on average
57% less time for the same crimes.

What SAA might define has nothing to do with what the pollies decide.

In Arkansas they legislated once to make the value of pi 4 precisely.
