  1. Of course, but Betty's situation is ideal for those that need just that
little bit more of a reason.

  8. Oooo... Oooo... Oooo... bloody good choice, if I do say so.

First thing when you get it - get thyself to an advanced rider training
and do the whole roadcraft and techniques thing - and then keep
    practicing.

[reminds self to get back to an advanced rider training day again]

yeah, absolutely - I don't reckon anybody can get enough of those sorts of
    things....

Several months ago I did a HART Ride n Thrive course. I was still on my Ls
(the only L-plater on the course) and I tell you what, it was a real
eye-opener. It seemed that the instructors were just reinforcing the stuff
I'd been hearing again and again from Stay Upright and from MRAACT roadcraft
seminars - so it was consolidating stuff I'd been hearing since Day 1, and
yet ppl who'd been riding for years found a lot of really useful stuff there
    too.

I have lots of good theoretical stuff in my head, but so little practical
experience (and even less confidence!), and it was really fascinating to see
other riders who had so many years of practical experience going "Wow!
Yeah!" I found it built my confidence (in my theoretical knowledge) quite a
bit - and also gave me a great sense of perspective, knowing that even
people who've been riding for years are still open to new stuff and eager to
learn more - there was never a sense of "yeah yeah, been riding all my life,
don't need this crap"... And talking to experienced riders was really useful
    for me too.

I also think my lovely Johno is quite right about "avoiding Ovlovs 101" - it
should be a mandatory part of all rider training (and driver training too -
have come across some shockers in Ovlovs while I've been in my car as
    well....)

  11. Any time you fell like giving away this mindless Volvo bashing, feel
free. I've been de-laned just once by a Volvo; I've lost count of the
number of Falcodores and Subarus that have done the same thing. Every
time I drive the Volvo I get the **** finger from some slope-head of an
18yo who has no real idea why he's doing it except that his Aunt Betty
said it was OK to abuse Volvo drivers. [1]

[1] A certain motorcycle magazine editor took this same point very
gracefully this year; in fact, he not only published my letter
unchanged, he turned the whole topic into a competition to find a
replacement term of abuse that wasn't manufacturer specific.

Nah, Andrew, keep your hair on - your paranoia is showing ;-)

My Ovlov bashing isn't mindless at all - it's based on hard experience. I've
narrowly avoided several scrapes in the past (while driving my car) that
involved Volvo drivers of one sort or another (there's a particular girl
driver of a maroon volvo here in Belco who is absolute effing POISON! and
who has caused me (non-contact but swearworthy) grief on at least 2 separate
occasions in the last 3 years. She can't fuckin' drive and she shouldn't be
on the road - and she's probably safer in a Volvo than anything else, but
God help the rest of us!

Point taken about there being plenty of fuckheads on the road in all sorts
of vehicles - especially here in Canberra (a dickhead on a chookie screamed
past me at speed ON THE LEFT on a quiet suburban street the other day. That
    was just plain rude.)

Don't take it personally when I speak ill of a particular Volvo driver
unless it was you ;-) You seem to have Volvo-induced paranoia... If it'd
been a dickhead in a Commodore I would've said so too... but it wasn't. It
    was a Volvo.

PS I saw your letter in the bike mag :-D

betty, (who doesn't have any slope-head
18 yr-old nephews, and whose son wrote off
his Volvo .5 of a second after bragging to his
mate that "these things are fuckin' tanks"...)

Howsybout a schooner (even if it is much smaller than everyone else's
    schooner)?
