Yes, I know..... it was "just a bike" - but it was MY bike and MY lifeline
and I loved it. And today I had to say goodbye to it.

The insurance company wrote off my little GPX. *sniffle*

Thanks Johno :) In my head I knew it was probably the better option, but my
heart just broke when I walked away from the shop - and it was sort of
unexpected... there didn't look to be much damage, and it was going just
fine (the bike, not my heart). And I hadn't really had time to prepare
myself for the possibility of being without a bike.

This has hurt more than the crash did... *sigh*

You have been super with the beers, Johno petal - I'll pull myself out of
this funk soon and get back to my rightful place <grin>

Ask the insurance company how much they will sell you the wreck for.
Ask the bike shop how much it will cost to patch it up to get it
roadworthy and in reasonable condition. Do the maths. There are a lot
of people making good money fixing up bikes which insurance companies
consider to be an economic loss.

  7. Don't worry - you'll get lots of offerns now to buy some piece of crap
that's been sitting in the shed for the past 5 years that "really does go
well" and "needs hardly anything done to it".

Your one true bike will come along soon enough if you wait long enough, are
a good girl, and make friends with cute little mice and birds that can
    comfort you in your grief.

lol, thanks for the warning <grin>!

Bit worried about the mice and birds - the cat has been bringing them in for
me to admire, and I keep liberating them before we have a chance to develop
a meaningful relationship - do you think that counts?

  10. You're looking at this entirely the wrong way. You haven't lost a
    bike...

.... you've now gained the excuse to go and buy another bike.

I know, but I've ruined my credibility by letting the Beemer go, when I
was half planning to streetfighter it anyway!

Particularly given I can recall a thread not so long ago where you were
considering selling that very same GPX so you could buy another LAMs
    bike....

Now you're going to have to.

All very true - but I would've liked to do it in my own time, with a lot
less bruising <grin> and adequate time to prepare a more fitting "goodbye".
(yeah, laugh if you like - I could do with a laugh!) I probably would've
shed a tear letting the GPX go in any circumstances because it's been MORE
than just a bike - so even selling it would've been sad (albeit something I
could've prepared myself for a little better). The impersonal bike yard,
where I didn't want to be a big sooky girl in front of the mechanics/sales
blokes/insurance assessor was not a good place. Poo. Still sad.

    But.....

    Onwards and upwards *sigh*.....

  17. It seemed to me when you told us about the accident that if you hit
hard enough to launch you over the bars then the front forks were
almost certain to be bent. From memory I think any hit at more than 3
or 4km/h will bend the stantions.

A new pair at dealer prices, plus dismantling and fitting, might be
enough to make the repair uneconomic but would be an easy fix if the
    "wreck" was bought cheaply enough.

Assuming there's nothing broken at the steering head, wheel or frame
    of course...

I was certainly doing a little bit over that.....
<grin> Thanks - I feel much better now. I'm sure somebody will look past the
cracked guard/screen/fairing and the curly brake lever etc etc and notice
what a well-loved and well looked-after little beastie he has been, and he
    will become somebody's "special project".

Interesting, what you said about the forks - the smash repair guy at the
bike shop seemed to think, at least on first inspection, that the front end
was still straight and true. It certainly didn't seem to handle much
differently - maybe the tiniest bit of extra movement in the steering - but
I could've been imagining that in my early post-crash paranoia - and when he
and the assessor talked to me about it they didn't mention the forks at all.
<thinking thinking thinking> Hmmm, maybe they thought I was a mechanical
cabbage who only noticed things like cracked guards and squished exhausts.

Poop. I suppose I reinforced that impression by listening carefully and
accepting what they said (them being the experts and all), and not having
    lots of questions. D'oh!

Damn. Gotta learn to ask more questions and to stop worrying about appearing
stupid. (no comments about the avoidability or otherwise of THAT, thank
    you)...

Or maybe..... just maybe (OY NEV - conspiracy theory coming up! <snigger>)
they were in cahoots and decided it's such a brilliant bike that if they can
convince the dumb owner that it's buggered, they can get it super-cheap, fix
it for next to nothing and make a huge profit!

[Enter biker betty, crime-fighter extraordinnaire, who will singlehandedly
smash this evil bike-scamming crime ring....]

Shit, I need a new bike. My brain hurts....
