Well you would certainly keep up with the Ural. Nearly anything on
    Earth could do that :)
I had this plan for the headline to read: " CANCER VICTIM IN LATE 60'S
    RIDES SOLO AROUND AUS".
I seem to be gathering a retinue though, so the "Solo" bit is starting
to look a little unlikely. You have about a year to work on your
"sickie" story :). You would be welcome of course.

Learn to slipstream trucks. Worked a treat on the MZ. Top speed went
    from 100kmh to 110!

If you're travelling alone, you can reduce the volume of clean clothes
and underwear you're required to carry by probably 75% or more. 2 pairs
of jocks will do if you're planning to wash at least once a week :)
Top heavy can easily be solved by the way you pack. A rider or pillion
sitting on the seat shouldn't make the bike top heavy, so therefore
packing 50-90kg of luggage and putting it where the pillions bum would
normally go shouldn't create a topheavy situation (but in terms of
balance when the bike is stationary, the less weight on the bike, the
easier it is to save it if it starts to go over in a carpark or at the
servo. Panniers achieve a simliar weight distribution. Keeping the
weight forward of the rear axle is probably more important than how high
or low it is carried. Ie put all the heavy shit in panniers or on the
seat and light shit in the topbox will create a much better weight
distribution than if it was reversed.
A trailer probably doesn't apply to that axle rule because is has it's
own axle. A trailer probably isn't the simplest cheapest or simplest
solution to set up initially, but it sure does make packing easier, you
can jam a whole lot of shit in there without too much thought and get
    moving.

Before you did a lap of Australia on the Ural I'd read the book by Carla
King about her trip around North America on a Ural outfit.
"American Borders: Breakdowns in Small Towns all Around the USA".

Realise this thread is a bit stale, but noone else said anything about
your timing so I will. Most people doing a lap of the country aim to
complete their lap by Sept/Oct rather than starting at that time.
You're going to be risking much wetter climate up north and hotter
temperatures down south. That might not bother you that much but it's
worth considering, especially if you decide to take the Ural.

  9. There's a bloke over here who seems to be on a quest to collect every
GPX250 ever made. I'll have to give him your address. :)

While you're pondering, how close did the bushfie get?

    Hope you're OK.

It was a bit scary for a while but it stayed well away from us - due
to the efforts of the RFDS. There was a lot of equipment both on the
    ground and in the air.
    Thanks for the concern
