as per above, it`ll idle fine and even keep charge in the battery but when
the bike is either warmed up or the lights are on , it coughs and misses.
The revs die from 1400 to about 1000 and dies. doesnt do it at all when cold
( not the choke by the way). charge rate is good, battery almost brand new
(3 months old) and in good nick, any ideas anyone?

Regulator? Mine was dodgy and pretty much did what you have described,
especially when placing a bit of load on the alternator.

that's what I thought too, although the voltage seems to be fairly constant,
might need to go back out and check it again after this bloody cyclone goes
    away!!!

im thinking possibly you have some crap in the carbs
and is partially blocking the pilot jet

as you say it is ok when on choke as it will have a rich mixture then

an easy check first of all is to drain the carb bowls through hose if your
carbs have a outlet that you can fit a hose then drain it into a clear
    object so
you can see the contents , wont guarantee no crap in there but its a
    possibility

    X-No-archive: yes
Any wonder it's upset after what it's been through the last couple of days!!
I suggest a Bex in the petrol-tank and some nice rest in a darkened garage.

  6. Dave, I have the same symptoms on my VFR, and is 99% sure its the
regulator/rectifier. Hope you get more change out of $300 than I would :(

  8. Running the light at idle will also put a bit more load on the engine, as
the alternator is drained for more electron flow than it would really like
to be putting out at the time.

Check the chassis earth connection ... where the -ve battery
lead connects up, that is. No reason, but it's easy to check
    and often causes Weird Things.

I second this. My -ve lead (at the battery) had a lose connection. Caused
a few weird things to happen.
