Bike Security Chains

    Well, that was an eye-opener!

Just watched two guys bolt-crop through Thatcham and Sold Secure chains
    in literally seconds.

Apparently if a chain is approved by either of these testing companies
then they're guaranteed to last a minimum of five minutes when attacked
by croppers. It turns out that that's complete bollocks. The longest any
of the chains lasted was about 90 seconds - and we're not talking cheap,
Taiwanese crap either. These chains were the £100 plus models made by
    people like Oxford and Abus.

The only chains that survived at all were two Almax ones, and they
survived intact, with little evidence that they'd even been attacked.

You've not seen the videos on the Almax website, showing competitors'
    chains being cropped, then?

They are good videos, which is why I got some Almax products :)

Were any of the chains low enough to allow the cropper wielder to have one
arm of the tool on the floor?

It turns out that that's complete bollocks.

Even the weekly comic have said that.

    The longest any
And they probably don't have approval either.

The price and weight of the competitors' chains, or the videos on the
    Almax website?

Slightly less than your insurance excess and a damn sight less than the
    cost of a new bike?
Aye, they're not light by any means.

Did the bloke using the bolt cropper have one arm of the cropper on the
floor, allowing him to use two hands and most of hs body weight on the
    remaining arm of the cropper?

But having a space where a bike previously rested isn't nice either.

Yep, and when they did the Almax they ended up with two experienced guys
    both jumping on the croppers.

I'll be looking at those then, coz the alarm on the Zed just decided to die.

Pretty sure the Almax III that I bought when I got my new bike was
rated as Thatcham Gold or sold secure gold or something like that. At
the time they had a newer, even more chunky Almax IV which wasn't rated.
