Recommendations for a better quality cloth tape?

    What and where from?

  2. I have found that most cloth tapes tear after a week or so
If I can;t fix it within that time or longer, then I tend to use duck tape

Some cloth tapes do seem to last, hence the question. And the better
cloth tapes seem to be duct tapes...

Make a patch from vinyl and use contact cement to put it on the
underside of the covering (glue cloth to cloth, it sticks better)

Yeah , there is a difference in cloth tape by the thickness of it.

The small rolls of about 2 metres you get in the supermarkets have fairly
thin tape as compared to the larger rolls of about 10 metres that is
probably 1.5 times thicker than the supermarket rolls.
I work in commercial construction and I have at times had to use the larger
rolls at work and the tape is a lot thicker as well as sticking better and
    it is fairly expensive .

I was quoted $250 for a 2" split. I thought at the time they probably
    didn't want the work.

Yeah , and the adhesive works very well.

I used a few rolls of this good tape at work one time to stick down some
corrugated plastic "cardboard" on top of carpet , it worked too well and
after the cardboard was taken up , nobody could get the glue stains out of
    the carpet.

The project manager chucked a real wobbly about it , but he couldn't do
anything to me because one of the site foremen instructed me to make sure
the cardboard would not slip and slid all over the place , so I stuck it all
down with the cloth backed tape.

I have done a quick search about getting a motor trimmer to recover the seat
Yep, that's about right, and good value for the result you'll get -
just like new, and good for many years to come. Where is the saving in
only spending $50 now if in a year or two either the repair fails or
the old cover fails in a different spot, and you have to spend another
$50? Why not just spend $100 now and be done with it permanently?

Is that similar to duct tape, or is it a product made from ducks?

Yeah , that what I was thinking and not only that , I can also choose the
type of material for the new covering.
The seat is just starting to go in one particular spot , I was thinking of
trying to stop the small split for the time being until I can afford to get
    the whole seat covered.

In that case get some of the glue used to repair synthetic soccer balls
as it usually works well on seat coverings

No but the cloth backing is a fabric called "duck".
Far more commonly known by it's purpose which was to assemble air-con ducts
    though.

Duck tape is a trademark for a duct tape:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_tape
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape

And you're not typically allowed to use it to install air conditioning
    ducts anymore.

It's still used if the pipe insulation is short to bind the pieces
together allowing a decent "slide" over the pipe with good thermal
    properties
