Well the Tenere has gone back to the dealers so now it's a case of how
long it takes to fix it.

I stuck a multimeter on the battery this morning and it was showing
12.8v with the ignition off, 12.7v with the ignition on and a steadily
decreasing 12.4v with the engine running. That'd be the reg rec acting
    the **** then.

I phoned Yamaha Assist (again) and gave them the story but they still
insisted on sending a technician to assess the situation before
sending a proper bike recovery vehicle.

He was here within 30 minutes but had already phoned me to say that I
faced a wait of several hours for the recovery vehicle and suggested
that as long as I was happy to do so he'd follow me to the dealers and
then bring me back home afterwards. A quick look at the meter readings
and a wiggle of wires and off we went to drop the bike off...

**** me, it got there without having to have the RAC booster kick its
arse on the way and Adie met me over there so the RAC guy went
straight home with good marks on his customer satisfaction sheet.

I'll wait until the bike's back here and running ok then let Yamaha
know my views on the whole affair. Basically I'm not convinced that
their 'Assist' scheme actually works properly and I'm not happy that
my only other option (barring using friends to help) was to pay the
dealer to collect a bike to repair an obvious warranty problem.

It probably does work extremely well: it may simply have a slightly
    different goal to yours.

I don't think expecting them to recover the bike to a dealer is an
    unrealistic goal.

I could quote the bit in the Yamaha owners manual that says don't ride
it if the engine management light has come on but the way the system
works is that if the RAC technician says it's ok to ride it then
that's what you have to do. That's not what I'd describe as working
    extremely well.

Oh, I quite agree with your POV, I was merely looking at it form a
    marketing/corporate angle.
