Hi. I'm an engineering student who has a pasion for all things two
wheeled. (Except scooters, no offence.) I am doing some research for a
project and i need a little market research. The idea is to build a
small, inexpensive unit which will allow the connection of any
personal music player, radio and mobile phone and automatically switch
between then as required. For example, you're riding alond, listening
to whatever you're in to and your phone rings. The unit switches the
feed to your earpiece(s) and your phone answers automatically. You can
speak via a throat mike. Once the call is done it will switch back to
your music. A second set of earphones and mike could be added for
passenger communication with whatever background music you want. Any
type of external controls could be added- volume, on-off, whatever you
like. If you have two minutes spare, please
forward me any ideas you have which you would like to see in such a
product (or how much you would be willing to pay). This will cost you
no money and you'll probably never hear from me again. (unless you ask
    for a reply) Cheers. email:

Look up "Chatterbox" and please do a better job when you build the damn
    thing.

He has a PASSION for all things two wheeled. If there were such a thing as
Chatterbox he would know about it.

    Andy,
all I can say is it's bad enough when people in cars have cell phones.
Please, do the world a favor and study WMD, instead. :) Sorry, but the
smart-ass sneaks out now and again.

.... oh great - one MORE way to distract a rider's attention

Also look at Kennedy Technologies - they too have most of what you are
    trying to build.

You guys seem to be missing the point. I would like to know what you
would like to see in such a unit. Not just that it should be beter
than Chatterbox, tell me how it should be better. (It should be less
than half the price for a start) And as for those who complain such
things might distract you- don't buy one! A little help here people.

I want it to cause immediate seizures in idiots who would buy such a
    distraction.

    AOL.

If you post to USENET, and you don't like the responses... it's probably
better to keep your mouth shut about them. Complaining about the quality
of info you get here isn't likely to improve things.

I strongly agree that the last thing a motorcyclist needs is a cellphone
hookup that they can use while riding. Riding a motorcycle demands 100%
concentration. Apparently Andy hasn't been paying attention to the huge
controversy over the problems of distracted driving caused by people
engaged in cellphone conversations. It's not about handsfree kits either-
simply being engaged in a telephone call while driving is a huge
distraction. It would only be worse for bikes.

As far as the "distraction" issue, that's common sense. Elaborating is
irrelevant. If you can't already figure out how it would distract a rider,
then you haven't done your studies. It is bad enough most car drivers think
they are driving a phone booth and they do not pay attention to their
driving. Visualize this on a motorcycle where defensive riding and total
    attention is required.

Stick with the rider to passenger/rider communication and forget the phone
    option.

If it distracts someone else and they run into me, I'm the loser, right? You
are potentially endangering my life, right? And I'm not supposed to say
    your idea sucks, right?

    1) Forget the talking on the cell phone idea. It's a step
    backwards.

    2) Make a digital answering machine FOR a cell phone that
you plug into while riding. THAT's a much better idea.

    3) Make it easy to plug a CD/mp3/radio into.

    4) Have a priority plug to plug a weather radio into that
cuts out when a weather bulliten is broadcast - or better
    yet, build the receiver in.

    5) Make it easy to plug one of the FRS radios that are on
    the market in

    6) Rider passenger communication is good too.

    7) Make it really really really strong. Stuff gets dropped
    often.

    8) Make it really really really vibration isolated.

    9) Keep the cost down.

I want it to key a warning tone whenever anyone within 100 meters
activates their cell phone. I want it to flash bright, multicolored
lights on the rear of my bike whenever someone closes to within 2.5
seconds of my tail. I want it to discharge a single 20mm HE round
with accuracy whenever anyone turns left in front of me at an unsafely
    close distance. HTH.

Perhaps a delayed explosion would be better? While the HE round would be
nice revenge, stopping the vehicle in its tracks leaves you an obstacle at
an even closer unsafely close distance. :)

Thank you Cam, whoever you are. This is all i was asking for, someone
elses opinion on what would make such an item better. You guys seem
too busy bitching to be of any help. One out of twenty something
replies was actually what i needed! I don't mind if you think the
idea's shit, it's not my idea! And i don't really care if you don't
want one either! (Neither do i to be honest) Just pretend, if you were
interested in such a thing, what features would you like to see.
