Bike licence first?

I'm lucky to be in NSW then! I understood (may well have been urban
myth) that you pretty much couldn't loose Ls so I kept my bike Ls
(infinite points :)) for the full 12 months, did Ps (1 point) for 3
months and then "blacks" (12 points) - for 18 months :-( How stupid was
I to think that after growing up on a farm with MX bikes I could keep my
license while working as a courier...

  2. I did...16 & 9 months or something like that

    Test was;

Licence huh?...I've seen you around...here you go then

And by the way, you can't park like that

Yup, me too. Had a bike on day 1 but was a couple of years before I got
    a car.

Was true, except they changed it in I think 1985, I kept my L's for
18months because of it, had to renew them and take the test a second
    time ! I couldn't afford more than a 250 anyway, so I couldn't see the
sense in running the risk of losing my licence - "lost" 6 points in 18
months as it was (young and stupid)

Every one that I knew at work that got their bike licence first had time
off accidents and those that got car licence first did not

Errm well if you want to get technical, 3 years after I got my first
bike, I got my first car, but it was another 6 years 9 months before I
got a bike licence, and another (roughly) 2 years after that I got a car
    licence...

I lost 14 points on my (4 point) Ps.
3 for riding without a licence.
3 for pillioning without the right licence (same offence; I was doubling a
bloke with a Kiwi licence instead of an Australian one)
[These were before I even got my Ps but I thought "Dammit; full speed
    ahead!"]
    1 for unroadworthy (noisy pipes)
3 for failing to stop at a stop sign (I was too busy watching the copper)
1 for not having a reflector on my tail-light (I kid you not)
    and 3 for .... ****; I can't remember....

Main problem I had with mine was the mph speedo. I'd not had a bike
with one of those before, and I kept wondering why all the cars were
    so slow.

I'd forgotten about the baffles, the stock pipes did it too ('cept not
flaming, just black and hot). Used to hold off until there was an
expensive European sedan just behind, as I recall. Scared the crap out
of me the first time it happened. Losing the back pressure on one side
only did nothing for the dodgy throttle response either.

  13. IIRC the first chance you got to check the speedo was when it was
already too late. I never looked at the one on my brother's bike
because it never worked at all. The cop who booked me was seriously
    unimpressed.

You trying to tell us you owned an R5 and never did the uncontrolled
    wheelie thing?

    Throttle control.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

  15. As if. There's a story, told only in hushed voices on dark and stormy
nights, that the very first R5 imported into Australia was a factory
hand-made special; sweet handling, smooth progressive power,
bullet-proof reliability and comfort BMW could only dream about. It did
the rounds of the dealerships, luring the customers in, until some fool
of Yamaha dealer mixed up an order and sold it to a customer, whereupon
it vanished from all knowledge. Until now. Now we know: for a time,
Zebee Johnstone owned and rode the Ghostbike, the controllable R5.

about 6 months between (car licence first), but like biggus, riding
bikes for 10 years before I got my first 4 wheel thingy, and that was
only because I was working out bush and bought an old series IIA.
