Bike insurance. Comedy cheap?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Fraser Johnston, Aug 2, 2007.

  1. Insured a new car and a new bike this week. Car was a 2002 Subaru Liberty B4.
It has a turbo but isn't really a race car. Cost $1000 per annum. Insured the
Super Blackbird. Goes like a cut cat. Cost $320 per annum. Obviously the car
is worth more than the bike but I would of thought statistically the bike would
be more likely to be written off. I can't work out how insuring 2 bikes costs
me 1/2 of what my car does. So why is bike insurance so cheap? Is all this
talk of people writing off bikes just talk?

The word is that drivers of turbo'd 2002 Subaru Liberty's are causing
far more "accidents" than riders of Backbirds! Presumably, you are far
more dangerous when driving than riding. True?

It's a Subaru....insurance companies hate Subarus as they're difficult to
work on and as such attract the higher premium.

Blackbird is usually chosen by old farts.

in 1994 GIO wanted $5800 to insure a 900ss with 60% NCB which they
dont count for bikes.. my ute of same value at same time $420.
    go figure.

<counting on fingers> hmmm, quite a flock (herd?) of them.....what would be

  13. And the winner in this week's "put the crackpipe down and back away
    slowly" competition is...

Try this game... get onto an online insurance quote generator and see
how much a 25-year-old can expect to have to pay to comprehensively
insure a 1000cc sportsbike in any of the east-coast capital...

  14. Must be me then. The least I have ever paid in insurance premiums have been
for my 2 bikes. And even though the VTR is an order of magnitude slower than
the Blackbird it is still only $100 less to insure a year. BTW relevant
details are I am 33 live in a good suburb in Perth and both bikes are garaged.

The online quotes are a bit of a joke. I recently obtained GIO comprehensive
at exactly half the online quoted cost after a little arm twisting at the
    local GIO office.
My local friendly vehicle inspector informed me of that option...apparently
GIO has 2 premiums for the same deal

Gefugged! Any suburb in Perth is better than one in Melbourne.

    Theo
Not technically in a suburb. Lives in a Shire with all the other Hobbitses.

I tried Shannons - it hates Firefox but quoted me 640 to insure my 250cc
garaged bike for $5k via IE.
insuremyride.com quoted me 760 including 1K of gear.
NRMA amazed the shit out of me. 323 for the same bike. HOWEVER - if you
want to insure your GEAR .. (wait for it ..)

Take out contents insurance on your house.
Mark your riding gear as "portable" on the house contents.
When you crash your bike and need to claim ..

You claim your bike on one policy, your gear on the other, pay excess on
both, and pretty much destroy your no claim bonus and likely any value
in claiming. I accepted their 21 day free trial offer, but I'm not
insuring a house to save my helmet.. and if I can't insure my gear and
bike on the one policy, I'm not going to.

I'm 36, no naughties recently at all, no claims recently, full NCB.

What *was* funny was when getting a quote via the phone (they don't list
Hyosung on their site) I was asked when I got my *driver's* license. So
I told them - since I was 21 but what about my *rider's* license ?

Apparently it doesn't come in to it ..

    WTF ?
