I'm not sure what difference that makes, unless they've got knobs &
things on the edges to operate them rather than a touchscreen?

Size of touchscreen buttons designed for gloves.
Buttons on side of unit for some functions
    Pretty much it.

Which is an important advantage IMHO, particularly if it's chucking it
    down.

Sure, but I can't imagine they're bigger than the 1490's, which are
huge & easily usable with gloves (it's got a very big screen). Not that
it would be a show-stopper for me anyway, attaching a PDA stylus or old
biro tube to the mount wiv a bit of string wouldn't exactly be tricky.

But it was the "I wouldn't use a waterproof case because the Zumo 400
etc. are designed for use with gloves on" statement I was querying, as
it implies Steve thinks you can't use a waterproof case with gloves.
Which isn't the case as far as touchscreen buttons go.

Did you have to shoe-horn it in (IIRC a thread discussing it being a
tight fit or was that someone else)?

I guess ease of attachment/removal is a consideration when you won't
want to be fiddling with zips & cables.

Certainly a cheaper solution. Or I could I guess put my HTC Desire in
    there as per Pete's suggestion.

Make sure you have a working audio link and don't be looking at the screen
    while moving

Yeah it was very tight the first time, but got easier with use. Much
    like a virgin.

Speaking of which, what is the helmet bluetooth headset of choice (must
    support A2DP for Copilot)?

The Sena SMH10 seems to be getting a lot of good reviews on this
side of the pond, and I'm planning on buying 3x of them as a set
for our upcoming trip to BC.

Does that go for inputting characters (text and numbers) as well?

Not sure, I've never felt the need to do that once kitted up. Hang on...

    <fires up SatNav>

You probably can with summer gloves, might be a struggle with thick
    winter ones though.

No idea, just cut and pasted the description so I could search for it
    again later.

Not sure what whitebox means either.

Just that. As Ben said a few days ago, exactly the same contents as a
retail box but in a plain wrapper. A bit like mail order porn.

Garmin do this on their factory refurbished units. Often they have never
been to a customer having been returned from the distribution chain and
sent back to be retrofitted with a new part[1] or have new firmware loaded.

[1] they had a dodgy batch of touchscreens on the 2610 series so did a
recall on all units in the distribution chain rather than let them get to
    customers.

Hmm... wondered if it was code for refurbished.

Just saw this eBay description for a zumo400 listed as "New other":

"This unit is Newly Overhauled but is no different to purchasing a unit
from Halfords or Dixons for much more money and comes as New Boxed
with Full Guarantee. Buy with confidence with our 14 day Money Back
Guarantee. Simply return back to us no questions asked for a refund,
all we ask is that the package is unused !"

Another bunch of rogues. Took the order, took the money and then
declared out of stock. No worries, I'll wait, it's only a few days.

New stock arrives and they want more money because the price has gone
up. It then took weeks to get the money back as I refused to pay extra
and they wouldn't honour the contract.
