I started riding big bikes in 1983 as well.

Got my first 16 inch wheel BMX and entered my first race.

Utter bollocks, there's always been the HP company for exactly that. I
remember several blokes of 17 18 19 running around on the fastest things
on the road at the time. Some of them wiped themselves out, but that's
    life (or not).

    getting better.

Everybody else is out of step, obviously. If you look at the thread

    just doesn't look right.

Actually I agree, as a daily commuter [1], I see all sorts of crap
    riding for the conditions.

However, there is a point I see with the figures quoted. Deaths can
quite easily measured, although they don't state the cause of the deaths
    - rider/driver fault, sole vehicle involed or multiple vehicle incident.
All this is fairly relevant to understand what actions are needed to
    reduce the deaths.

What I find puzzling is the 6% increase in journeys. How do they measure
that? Without that information the statistic is meaningless, unless they
attained both figures by the same means, then they are not comparable.

  18. Indeed. You bought a bike, and then your parents bought you a car,
    hoping you'd give up biking.

On the approach to seventeenth birthday I asked my parents if I could
have a bike. My Father said yes, Mother looked shocked...

Rather pleased with myself I showed Dad the obligatory Yamaha catalogue
pointing to the one I wanted.

"No problem, you buy it, you insure it you can have it... We'll pay for
    lessons and your gear."

Knowing I had no job or prospect of one, this is not the response I
    expected or wanted.

The challenge was set though, I bought a DT100 a few months later.
