Bike-Comm ????

    G'day, recently I purchased a BMW setup for touring which came with a pair
    of "bike-comm" units, the original owner had one on the bike I purchased,
    and the other came off his friends bike which I was given also.

    At this stage they are nothing but a maze of wires and bits, Ive worked out
    they are simply a modified AM CB radio with some fancy switching and the
    bits to stick inside your helmet. Looks like they were designed as rider to
    rider, or rider to cb, which would be good setup on two bikes when
    travelling

    The web address on the units (www.bikecomm.com.au) no longer works, and
    apparently they were made by a Ulysses bloke in Sydney called Don Pearson.

    Would anyone know where I can get a copy of the original installation notes
    etc? I'd like to re-use both sets and they look too good to bin.

    I had the same setup on a K1100LT, I tore it out and binned it, no one uses
    AM CB anymore go for the Autocom setup or similar.

    Alternativly ask on the Ulysses site you may get a responce their.

    Because it is crap, the system was always crap, and with a FM 2 way radio
    you can monitor and talk to other road users who warn you of road hazards
    and Police Radar etc, AM also has a constant background noise and lots of
    interference that will drive you nuts, did I mention it was crap?



    You asked for help, you got it and now you want to whine about it. Work it
    out for yourself.

    Thanks, I'll get a Ulysses memeber mate to post a message for me.

    AM is fine for rider to rider at close range it will be no better or worse
    than FM as long as its installed on both bikes properly, I have a pair of
    units and it will do rider to rider and rider to mate....as for background
    noise, the mute/squelch control will get rid of that.

    If its sole porpoise is bike-to-bike communication, who gives a ****
    if nobody else is using it?

    AM is really really crap for this.

    The problem isn't that no one else uses it (well not much anyway), the
    problem is that the ignition noise will drive you nuts.

    And before anyone says squelch, an AM squelch will only silence ignition
    noise when no ones talking. You'll still hear heaps of interference
    whenever the other person talks.

    It's hard enough to make out what people are saying inside the wind
    noise of a helmet without adding distortion and interference.

    I honestly believe that no system at all is better than AM for this
    particular usage.

    Exactly what I said and was bagged for it. I have used the system he is
    talking about and binned it. I now use an Autocom System with FM radios and
    it is brilliant.
