Bike collection

  1. Picked up the bird last night so now I have 2 bikes and I'm thinking of getting
a dirt bike. Considering I have only been back on bikes for 6 months this
hobby is turning out more expensive than heroin addiction. Please tell me that
it gets better. I'm running out of room.

You must get yourself a dirtbike.

A DR650 Suzuki would be perfect.

  3. STOP TEMPTING ME!!!! I keep looking at it. And now I don't have a wife to
keep me from buying stuff like that. I'm running out of room under the patio.
Thank god you are in another state.

  5. It doesn't...

....I just moved from Canberra back to Sydney, and the shed contents
required cramming into a van. I discovered the following:

-I have five spare ZX6/9 wheels, not four (found an extra rear... with
a good Michelin Pilot Power on it; result!)
-I have four spare sets of ZX6/9 forks, not three (the set with the
Ohlins internals were hiding in bubble wrap)
-I have three spare aftermarket mufflers, not one (I remembered the
home-made aluminium job for the ZX6 D&D headers, forgot all about the
stainless Yoshi RS-3 and the carbon Micron)
-I have two green ZX9 ducktails, not one.
-I still have the worthless stock exhaust from the 1997 ZX-9R I sold
    in 2001.

....and so on, and so on...

  11. Ebay??? I have thus far avoided looking at bike related things on it. To be
    honest I'm afraid.

    Hi Fraser,

I'm in the middle of a long term pocket-money project, restoring a 1980 Ducati Drama SD900 and,
amongst buying bits and pieces from dealers in Oz and around the world, I've picked up a few parts
(new handlebar controls and switches, new rear mudguard) through EBay. Perfect condition, good
price and mailed promptly. You simply do your homework and research the seller as well as what
    they're selling.

  15. My friend who is an old biker was telling me about buying a drama. He said he
was riding along doing 80 and the front wheel collapsed on him. It was
apprently a common problem. Bike was a write off and he was ok luckily. They
gave him his money back for the bike.

Campagnolo rims. There were a series of catastrophic failures at the
time, about '83 I think. Recalls were issued and rims were replaced.
It's possible that some are still out there.

I will say there were some horror stories in the early days when the motorcycling world was changing
from conventional spoked wheels over to these new fangled mag wheels (circa 1978 to 1981 roughly). I
remember AMCN and REVs magazine having nasty stories every issue around 1980. I bought a brand new
Drama in 1980, rode it for a couple of years and had no mishaps, with the only problem being the
really badly designed starter motor clutch (notorious). Contrary to popular rumour the Drama
electrics never gave me an ounce of trouble. Anyway, I had to sell the Drama to finance a house
purchase in 1983 (the old story).

Yes, I've heard of early mag problems, there were some factory recalls and I've heard that some
enthusiasts running the original Campagnolo (correct spelling?) wheels today have been known to have
them crack tested by one of the procedures available (dye and ultra violet light, ultrasonic etc).
I'm the second owner of my Drama, bought it with 25 years and over 200k on the clock, still with
    original Campagnolo wheels.

You watch. I'll put it back on the road after a rebuild and the bloody wheels will collapse.

    Yep, them's the buggers Toosmoky.

I frequent one or two classic Iti bike enthusiast sites and haven't heard of any wheels "coming a
gutser" in the modern era. There has been chat (and advice) about owners getting their wheels
professionally checked but no horror stories in recent times. I had a rear wheel replaced on my
brand new Drama at around six weeks as the wheel was warped, running out of true (axially, not
radially) by about 6mm to 8mm. The defect wasn't there at birth and started to develop over a six
week period (noticed by a following rider thank God). I have a strong feeling it was the onset of
    metalurgical failure.
