You don't need horses for distance work, all you need be, is in no hurry.

Too small. 500 minimum for anything approaching extended motorway work.

  5. It's going to get bashed getting it on and off isn't it? A bashed
shiney bike looks shite - like a bashed but otherwise ordinary car. A
Bashed Land-Rover looks like it's got character. So it needs to be a
    bike equivalent...

  6. And lightweight to make loading and unloading easy? Ideally wants to
be light enough to load on and off with a couple of ramps - messing
around with a little derrick would be too much like hard work.

He seems to think an Enfield wont fit - remember it must be less than
    72 inches long.

    An MZ ETZ with off road biased tyres. Looks ok battered; fairly light;
rugged enough to cope with tow paths, tracks etc. and disposable enough
for it not to be a big issue if it fell in the cut.

Not necessarily, I regularly commuted for nearly a year on the A27/M27
using an MZ ETZ250 - 120 miles each way.

I would have suggested a Yamaha Serow. (XT 225) well, apart from the
"motorway speeds" bit. But nice and light, and fairly all-purpose. Much
    cheapness.

But, it's longer than 6 feet. Most bikes are, including the XT350 you
    yourself suggest...

How about going the other way and getting a bike thats big enough to carry a
    narrowboat?

  16. Is it... Actually, it was more of a guideline than an actual
suggestion. I suspect that there aren't many <6foot bikes about. The
importance of 6 feet long is that it will fit in the cratch across the
boat (boat width 6 feet 10" and not have to sit up higher on boards and
get bashed by bridges and tunnels.

Could be a non-starter this then...

  18. It would actually do for 50% of the projected use - but not the other
50... And rather than a monkey bike, I might as well get an old fold-up
    Mobylette.

  20. I was about to suggest a Yamaha XT. Any XT, any age, any capacity.

When did you last see an XT that *didn't* look like it had been hi
several times with a frying pan?
