Obviously just teething difficulties while coming to grips with the 3 sentence
    thing.

Your right john. The original post could have been written with the
correct word but that wouldn't sound as good/inflame car drivers.

Note word "tried". implying deliberate malice.
what, the one that you want to turbo cos it doesn't have enough go?
So they weren't trying to kill you? Nothing deliberate about it?

You just found people tired, inattentive, not paying attention? (And of
course all bike riders are fully alert at all times....)

How many cars are on the road? How many have "tried to kill you" as a
    percentage?

me, I figure it's much more productive to say "There are people on the
road who are tired or inattentive, they are usually selfish and want to
get where they are going as fast as they can because they find driving
    a chore. ".

That gives me something to look for and a good idea of who will do what
    and when.

Much more useful than this emotive "trying to kill me" rubbish.

You say you are at your most vulnerable from the sides but in the next
sentence you are actively positioning yourself between cars to protect
    your rear?

There are to many generalisations going on here. Its also easy to say
bikes travelling at higher speeds than a car are suddenly there ,
(especially when lane splitting) hence the car driver failing to see
    them.
I keep a general eye out for bikes when in traffic and if I see one
lane splitting I will move over in my lane to give them more room.
same has to be said for riders so nothing new.

....because a stationary car can't cut you off, and if some dickhead coming
up doesn't stop, he'll hit one of the cars you've just gone past, instead of
    you...or so the theory goes.

It seems Nev really has it in for me this week - jesus Nev, did my 'bias in
media' post upset you that much?

It's all a bit of fun Nev, wasn't meant to cause any harm :)

Nah - I've never thought of it as an insult - just a descriptive term. Kind
of like 'sparky' for electrician, or similar.

It's fairly worldwide, Americans and British riders use the same term to
    describe car drivers.

A couple of things aren't true in the above - the guy rallying the idea to
post the thread to irriate car drivers wasn't me, although I posted the
original thread to aus.cars. I posted because actually got interested in the
idea as a legitimate question. Most of the folks at aus.motorcycles said it
would be regarded as trolling. Some folks at aus.cars have seen it that way,
others didn't. That's life on usenet.

Also, there have been some excellent answers and I (the originator of the
original thread) have acknowledged that fact directly to the people
concerned. people will always make pedantic side comments on any thread on
usenet, that is hardly unique to motorcyclists or any other group.

A few other people also criticised me for generalising in my original post
(which I was indeed guilty of) and I accepted the criticism without question
    and then rephrased my question.
Who got burnt? I didn't - I've enjoyed this thread and learnt a few things I
    didn't know before.
That was Nev, and he's always grumpy.

So in summary - I've enjoyed this thread. You've got some intelligent and
articulate folks over here at aus.cars, and I've enjoyed reading their
thoughts. I've also had some of my own prejudices corrected, and I'm glad
for that. I'm disappointed that some of you are so determined to view it as
an 'us vs them' scenario - we all share the road and we all get different
    things out of it.

Actually neither - I wrote the original post and naively assumed that all
car drivers knew that that was the nickname riders have for them. Kind of
    like 'poms' for the English.

It never occurred to me at the time that anyone would be offended by it, or
even notice it. All motorcyclists call car drivers 'cagers' - it is a
worldwide thing and it has been going on for decades.

Well that fine, but surely he is aware that many riders take a contrary view
to the one he expressed. He must know that his viewpoint, however valid, is
a minority one. If he'd couched in terms of his experience as a rider, I
wouldn't have said what I said.

  13. You brought up the subject of roadcraft and dared suggest that anything
other than slow and steady could win the race... in fact, you implied that
someting resembling a race is there to begin with.

If you want to call a truce, state that leathers can minimise serious injury
    in a crash...

I've said it a few times before - I posted the original thread. I was (and
still am) interested in the answers we'd get. Several at aus.motorcycles
felt that it would be only taken as pure trolling (as you clearly regard
    it). That's your choice.

As for me - it's been an interesting thread and I've learnt a few things I
didn't know before. That was what I wanted out of it, and I'm happy with the
    result.

If some tosser on a wankcycle pulls into the space I allow between my car
and the vehicle in front of me and happens to still be there when the lights
change, I will ignore his presence and accelerate away at my usual or
preferred pace. He better get out of the way, and have a damn good reaction
    time!

I gather that that was a witty attempt to try and suggest that my original
post means I must too, be a wanker. Fair enough, thank you for your profound
and insightful contribution to this discussion.

We look forward to more enlightenment from your sophisticated mind :)

Why can't we all just get along????

Honestly James - I haven't gotten that feeling from Zebee that you're
    talking about.

In text it's often easy to misconstrue people's real meaning, and we all
also tend to type faster than we think (I've typed a few things I'd would
rather have not said in this thread, but oh well).

Zebee is someone who's opinion I'll usually take on board and weigh up. I
felt that one of Zebee's posts aimed at me was a bit snippy, but I'm
assuming there was no malice intended, and besides, the content made a lot
of sense and gave me something to think about.

    [snipped inflamatory shite]
    most newer ones appear so.
In the past days when I owned and regularly rode bikes this was far from the
case, although it took an embarrassing defeat for me to realise this!
I was riding my 650 twin Yamaha and was soundly thrashed by a mate's XY ute,
admittedly a wickedly warm 351 ute but still a shock to my system.

    cheers
