  3. I didn't realise that forks had made it that far north. After all -
    we've only had them in the South for about 200 years.

    Having said that - I should be fitting the petrol tank sometime this
    evening, and then it's done. Finished. Complete. All over.
    In a way I feel depressed. There ain't another bike I fancy, so what will I
    spend my time and money on now ? Is there any point in keeping my job ?
    Maybe things will look better when the sun comes out again.
    What Sir needs is a nice 250 MZ . ;-)

    I own a 650 V-strom. It is a great all-round bike and can handle mild off
    road stuff like forest trails but it isn't built for serious off-roading
    (apart from anything else the cast alloy wheels are not really up to it).
    It is generally acknowledged to be a better bike than the 1000 v-strom as it
    is less heavy and engine is less lumpy at round-town low revs. It doesn't
    give much away to the DL1000 in performance either. I REALLY like mine. I
    have put over 10,000 miles on it since I bought it last April. It can sit
    happily on the motorway at an indicated 100mph (90 mph according to my sat
    nav) and the handing is really good. It accelerates at a very respectable
    rate for a 650 and the engine has a flat torque curve so it pulls well all
    the way to its upper limit of around an indicated 115mph (105mph). Very
    comfortable. Can carry lots of gear with panniers attached. Very reliable -
    only one very minor problem - loose wire to radiator fan.

    I'd be curious how similar it is to the SV650 from which it gets its
    engine.

    Because the 650 isn't exactly stimulating.

    A modern Yam Ténéré is definitely on the cards, but they didn't bring
    in many and they're a bit scarce. The other option is a Triumph
    Scrambler. The third is a 650 V-Strom. Arranging a test ride on the
    Scrambler (I'm prepared to be underwhelmed, actually). Anyone here own
    the 'Strom?

    CAn't really think of anything else in that sort of mould. Open to
    suggestions, though. Oh, not a TransAlp.


    What about a Versys? Not a single I know but then nor is a Vstrom.

    Similar engine but not the same - different tuning for flatter torque curve
    and Nikasil lined barrels. If by "stimulating" you mean fast then no, it
    isn't particularly fast and it isn't meant to be. However, most owners love
    them because they are so versatile, comfortable and reliable. Tend to hold
    their resale value reasonably well too.

  16. Basically, yes, and I liked the old TransAlps. The new one doesn't
    appear to hold a candle to a 650 V-Strom.

    The 690SM is immense fun to ride in a big single kind of way but it
    isn't any cop for off road if you want that capability.

    It's very easy to torment bigger bikes if you pick the right road
    (around the Black Horse for instance) but you wouldn't want to ride it
    for long distances unless you wanted a repeat appearance from Terry
    the red nosed turtle.

    You're welcome to have a day riding mine around any time you want, it
    just needs taxing and it's good to go.

    In you're fuckin dreams mate.
    The 1000 is much faster and when you sort it with pipes, PCIII, tyres
    and Ohlins it is a fast bike . It would cream a 650.
