Assume for a moment, that it had been decided to get rid of a
motorbike by breaking it , and flogging the bits to unsuspecting souls
    on Ebay.

How far do you break it?

    Down the engine, or further?

Unbolt everything from the frame and sell separately?

Tank, sidepanels and tail as a set, or discretely?

Scrap the frame or sell it on with V5?

    All advice welcome.

Is it the KH? In which case can you give us time to rummage through our box
of bits and find out what's missing.

Assuming that the engine still works then sell it as a complete unit.
Sell sets of lights/indicators , significant electrical components , levers
& switchgear all in their own lots.
Same for wheels as a pair , forks , suspension etc.
Tank separate , sidepanels and tail as a pair.
I suspect the advice could change depending on what the bike actually is

Cheeky monkey. Anyway, it could be "both" relics.

    I have a cunning plan.
I have a wide selection of deep-water docks nearby should the need
    arise.

The clutch went 45,000 miles back. We've been through all this before.
I've even had the plates, spring gasket, and locking plate in my shiny
red tool box for about 18 months.

I'm just too scared to start on it, and I didn't have the stomach[1]
for the fight during the winter.

Maybe at the end of the summer.

[1] Yes, I know, there's no need to comment.

Well, I always *wanted* a purple metalflake H2C.

    With K&Ns, and Denco pipes.

But I don't know what I'll end up *getting*.

    Dr Zoidberg says...
Right down as far as you can sensibly go.
Yes, regardless of running or not. Be sure to tell them it hasn't been
run for a while and you cannot guarantee it will even start when lobbed
    in a frame.

Yes, everything is worth money. Even things like the battery carrier and
tool tray have some value to someone. I got 15 quid for a good tool tray
for an RD when I broke my blue one.
Wheels seperately, forks as a pair, yokes as a pair, switch gear
seperately, indicators as a set of 4, lights seperately, all electrical
    components seperately.
Wrong. Sell everything bodywork related seperately, you get more money
    that way.

Sell the frame with V5 on its own and swingarm seperately.

Split as many things as you can, and sell matching parts in different
lots. For example, cams / bearing caps in one lot, head / buckets in
another lot, so people have to buy more lots to get a matching set.

    Frame with V5 sounds good.

    Muck says...
Individual engine parts fetch bugger all, especially on an older 2-
stroke like the TS. He'd be better off selling the engine unit complete.

    Lozzo, Mar 31, 2005

  11. You take each little component and sell it separately. You get it into
as many components as possible. Out there, somebbody wants that little
    widget.
You will get good money for an engine if you can prove it runs. just
saying it does isn't good enough. As, therefore, proving it is not
always possible (perhaps because you already flogged the coils or the
carbs), then break it down, Pistons as a set, head complete (or a pair
or trio if we're talking two strokes), crankshaft, rods as a set,
    pistons as a set.
Yes, absolutely. Sidestand, centre stand, airbox, battery box, fusebox,
wiring loom, reg/rec, even the tank rubbers.
Separately, again, but remember to put a pointer from each item to the
others. "This is a tank from an XXX (H1?)..... see my other auction
no.xxx for left panel, right panel and tailpiece.
Sell it with V5. And remember to state "Buyer collects".
See above. I have broken and flogged a few bikes - most recently a 400
Four, and a few years ago an H1 (is there a pattern here?) aand in both
cases earned about twice as much as I'd have got selling the bikes
complete. And the H1 was a lovely taxed and tested original runner.

In every case, all I've been left with is a handful of nuts and bolts
and they've gone into my Bumper Tins Of ShiteOldFasteners. Oh, I've got
a pair of forks from a CD175 somewhere.

I'm not anticipating getting much for the cams, to be frank.
I'm inclined to think (and I don't know why) that the opposite is
likely to be true for the blue motorcycle.

    Thanks, everyone.

Well, the Tax and MOT run out in July: I'd best try to get some use
    out of it until then.

I can start on the shit heap right away.

When I was monitoring for daytona bits I saw a tatty black 955 go up
for sale on ebay. A week or so after it was sold it appeared back on
ebay in kit form. Every last panel, light, fob, grommet, screw and
    washer was on there.

So, I'd say "the entire lot, as seperate bolt-on units, and the frame +
v5". I bought my bits as they were what I needed - a nice big bit I
could just bolt straight on. Don't break it down too far.

I was going to use the habitual Mr Pot reply, but as there's probably
some **** round here who has that as his RL name, I can't.

Anyway, I see no weirdness - the fat kid is the obvious Double Decker
to use as a projectile weapon. Right?

I'd suggest selling the frame without the V5. If anyone needs a
replacement frame (crash damage etc.) they can readily transfer a new
frame number onto their existing V5. That's my understanding anyway.

Whereas with the V5 they can transfer someone else's engine etc. to the
V5. Problem is that someone may not be too happy about it.
