Bike blitz on lane splitting & hard shoulder riding - Brisbane

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by martin.stephenson, May 31, 2007.

  1. This morning on the Western Freeway 2 motorcycle cops and 1 patrol car
were pulling over bikes for lane splitting and hard shoulder riding.
The stupid thing is that they were causing the traffic congestion as
when I rode past (I was warned by a truckie flashing his lights) the
traffic was clear. So in my mind this is pretty much entrapment where
the cops setup a situation (traffic congestion) which causes the
motorcyclists to lane split or ride the hard shoulder. If the cops
weren't there, there would have been no need to for bikers to lane
split. I mean what if one of the guys was knocked off while changing
lanes in the cop created traffic?

I spoke to a guy about this when I got to work this morning and he
said he saw a bloke get nailed on the gateway this morning for riding
the hard shoulder. So perhaps there is a bit of a blitz on at the
    moment.

ride to the conditions, stop blaming everyone else
and so he should get done, riding on the hard shoulder is the wimps
    way out...

Umm.. it's no more entrapment then "THe officer left his wallet, right
there on the car seat! Of course I took it!"

If they just give you the opportunity to break the law, that's not
entrapment. If they say "Go on, up the hard shoulder, we need to
clear the jam" and book you for it, that's illegal.

They can book you for rising up the 'breakdown' lane but not for lane
splitting. What road rules did they throw at the guys lane splitting
as there is no rule explitly against it?

What a bunch of softcocks for stopping for the cops, simply change lanes and
    keep riding.

What is wrong with you guys? You ride a motorcycle to enjoy the freedom that
it gives you. Why are you so critical of riders that push the limit? Why do
you chastise people for questioning the norm? Everyone here rides a piece of
machinery that is totally impractical in today's society let you are all the
first to tell them that they are wrong for the slightest err. Why can we not
unite and and overcome the people that stop us from enjoying the passion
that we enjoy so much; motorcycling.

Impractical in an age where petrol guzzling cars rule the roads? Surely
bikes get you there faster and at less cost and less impact on the
environment and the greenhouse effect we hear so much of.

If I could find someone that made bicycle racks for motorcycles, the car
    would get very little use.

There's no law explicitly saying you can't walk up to a cop and put a
bullet through his head either.. but I wouldn't want to be the person
who decided to test this loophole in court.

Were they REEEAALLY pulling over lane-splitters or just emergency-lane
    invaders?

As far as I'm aware there IS a law that says you can't kill people.
(and I've been told that some coppers ARE people)
Bit of a grey area there........

The statement is not incorrect, well until you point me to the rule
that is explicitly against lane splitting. Making people believe and
accept a rule that doesn't exist will only make it easier for the
'powers that be' to introduce it later.

Seems as long as you don't break existing road rules whilst lane
    splitting you are ok.
