    snip the sigs of the previous post: the '--' and all that follows.

    If all else seems likely to fail, begging forgiveness whilst sobbing may do
    the trick. I would also recommend selling the bike to his wife/partner or
    trusted friend for a nominal sum just before the court appearance so that he
    can say without perjuring himself that he has sold the bike and has not
    replaced it. It needs to be sold to someone who he can REALLY trust so that
    he can buy it back again for the same price immediately after the court
    appearance.
