Still thinking of getting something trial bike like to blat around the
roads here and maybe pop up a few lanes, no real off roading just a
    bit of fun.

I did/do like the XT 500 type of bike but there a bit old now, and not
    readily available.

XT 600 could be a bit to big and pricey for a few hours a month having
a giggle on the back roads.

I'm not into all that super plastic Paris - Dakar look stuff really.

So what bikes are there now that might fit the bill ?

  3. DR350/400. XT350, but they're getting a bit long in the tooth now.
    KMX200 - ditto.

Getting a "trial" bike for anything other than real off roading would
be verging on the insane. I suggest you get a trail bike instead...
What's your budget, how long are your legs, & how many guard dogs have
    you got to protect it?

Be mostly roads around Aber, so that can be both really here :) Back
roads and old road up the hills and stuff, no real trail riding as in
what some ppl here does do in the mud and stuff like that what
happened in the France place maybe.

That puts you well & truly in shed territory. Forget about deciding on
a particular model, & just grab the first half-decent bike you find at
    that price. At least...
....you should be able to reach the ground on just about anything.

Seems a ridiculous price, but then again it's still a hell of lot
cheaper than a new bike. TOG, or AWK, any idea what's a reasonable
price for one of these nowadays?

Anyway: *want*. I had one almost[1] exactly like it back in, oooh,
1977. Loved it to bits, I did. Maybe that's where the future of biking
    lies for me...

[1] The tank decal was slightly different. Ahh here we go, as seen on
a 1977 model (even more expensive):
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260045057747
Still odd, though. Mine definitely had the exhaust seen on the 1976
one and the tank from the '77.

Last week I posted details for Vass of a reasonable KLR250 available in
Guildford, asking price UKP700. He didn't come back on it, but if you
would be interested let me know and I can send details of the bike and
seller (a friend of a friend).

Jeez. Sub-£500 dirt bikes are generally not roadworthy creatures. Best
you can hope for is some kind of semi-shagged 125. *Everyone* wants a
decent used dirt bike and prices are just silly.

You could get a serviceable XT350 for maybe £750, but for a monkey?

Silly money. Really nice XT500s start at a couple of grand now, though
good runners in presentable condition can be had for £500 less.

All he is going to get for £500 is a shagged field bike.................why
oh why do people think they can still buy good bikes at 1980s prices?

  16. CanAm Bombardier. Unless they've suddenly shot up in value in the past
year or two, you should pick one up for a few hundred. Lovely little
squaddyproof lumps of pig iron. Actually, they go quite well if not
    utterly fucked.

Heh, he'll use some of it up getting the rear brake drum reskimmed each time
    it goes out of round.

The images on the front page change each time it's loaded, but there's
one that regularly comes up saying "0% FINANCE on DR-Z400SM". I guess
they're still running the offer, but it's not on the whole Suzuki range,
so not trumpeted in quite the same way.

Did my CBT and test on one of those. 'Kin racks on the back of the military
ones were ever so useful for touching the top of the cones that were used on
    the CBT bit. Out spannnerrrrrrs!
