Nah, too bloody idle to be part of a race, more of a breed.

At least we don't splash around in the shallow end of the gene pool with TOG.

  4. I'm not wriggling. Kindly note that I have stuck to one theme when
arguing with you: my remark was not racist. It may have been insulting
to people of a certain religion, but not race. Insulting someone's
    religion is not racist.

Nowm, over the past few days, you have modified your stance from it
being racist to it being insulting to "whichever culture/race/religion
    that is".

See? It's even quoted up there.

This means that if anyone's wriggling, it's you. And that's a *good*
thing because it means you're altering your POV. It means you're now
acknowledging that possibly the remark wasn't racist.

See what happens when you collide with a superior intellect? You learn
    something.

Not 'largely untouched' then? (And it's generally spelt 'Sumatra'
    btw).
You were implying that Indonesia as a nation was not very much
affected. 90000 dead (or whatever) is quite a large afect, I'd say.

  9. Reminds me of working for Marconi and being bollocked by the divisional
manger at a meeting for the high level of expenses on a trip abroad.

"That's more than I would spend!" he said. Throwing my expense sheet
    back at me.

Before formulating my reply I considered two things:

One, this should not of been discused in public (as it were).
Two, it was at a trade fair in Germany where Marconi had booked the
hotel and that is where I ate most of the time. (OK I ate well along
with the recommended wine for the meal)

    My answer was:

"It's obvious. I've must have been brought up to a higher standard of
    living than you."

It did not go down well.

I had no problem in leaving that division for another division later
    that year.

The Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem eventually became
St. John Ambulance, not the Red Cross. IIRC, they were not knights in
any way, shape or form, being a holy order forbidden to take part in
combat, although many of them were formerly crusaders of one kind or
    another.

As a few points to consider...
    Are the Irish a race?
Are the Jews a race? If so, are they a different race to the arabs,
with whom they share a common (genetic) heritage?

Actually, any definition of "race" based on genetics is on very dodgy
ground as (iirc) homo sapiens is remarkably homogeneous - even though that
might not be obvious to us.

Still: if you're prepared to consider even the most trivial of genetic
differences sufficient, would you consider all of the native peoples of
sub-saharan Africa to be a single race? Or those of the Indian
    sub-continent, or China etc.

  16. Well, if nothing else, I know how to spell 'supercilious'. And the
education and intellect that so endowed me also endowed me with the
ability to argue rather more cogently than yourself.

    Point proven, then.
