  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Verdigris"
It was a swell bit of timing.

  2. Or Sikhs. Or, and I'm damned if I can remember which sect they are, the
    "Celestial" Americans, who wear turbans.

It made a point, as did the Jesus-creeper remark. And suggesting that
being pissed-off with religious intolerance is racist is rather short
    sighted.

I'm well aware of the difference. If others aren't, that's their
    misfortune.

Charity is requested with hat in hand and bowed head. It is preceded
by "please" and completed with "thank you." If it shows up as cases
of pickled beets and salted cod, you are going to live on pickled
beets and salted cod and be glad that it wasn't laundry detergent and
cat litter. And if god told you not to eat cattle or swine, don't
shake your dead children in my face as they starve amidst plenty.

When did this crap start about charity being demanded and specified?
The VICTIMS! are welcome to starve if they don't like the packing
crates. Indonesia is a member of OPEC. Why didn't the oil-rich
countries toss in a $billion or two in spare change? Physical reality
will have the last laugh as cholera and dysentery propagate without
regard to race, creed, color, religion, or national origin. Death is
always an equal opportunity employer. Nature doesn't care; we do.

Their roads are washed out. Shouldn't we be sending them millions of
SUVs, all-terrain vehicles, and motor scooters with knobby tyres free
of all charges? Helmets, too - safety first!

Indeed. Nature shrugs its shoulders and man's puny structures are as if
    they never were.

fwiw, it looks to me like the perfect antidote to the hard-of-thining
who claim all religion to be an ultimate force for evil in the world.
    Yes, basically.

I think it's also partly a reaction against what's gone on in Iraq.

"We're nice people despite the actions of our government and want to show it
    somehow."

If you had to go and make your point in Bradford, I bet you'd couch it in

  10. Listen. In my OP, I took great care only to mention religious groups,
not racial. I had a feeling someone would try and play the race card.
    OK, trolling, if you like.

Now, sweller rightly pulled me up on the Red Cross/Red Crescent point.
If you've read the thread, you'll see I'm grateful for his point and
I've learned something (quite a lot, actually) that I didn't know.

He also chided me for the remark, but sweller was discerning enough not
to play the race card because sweller's radar is rather finely tuned.

He doesn't get the wrong end of the stick. You, OTOH, would get the
    wrong end of a hula-hoop.

Interesting when, AIUI, the logo was chosen simply to be the "reversal"
    of the Swiss flag.

    Because of Switzerlands neutrality...
If you are running an aid/medical organization and you want it to be
able to go about its business unhinderd by the populace at large, to
be accepted, doesn't it make sense to have a logo/symbol that is
    acceptable or appears positive?

Ok TOG, lets take another look at your OP.

    =================================================
    =================================================

So you claim that you are referring to religions not races.

What religion do the 'wealthy ragheads' belong to TOG? Capitalism in all
    likelihood I'd have thought

The fact of the matter is that your bluster about differentiating race and
religion is belied by the use of a particularly insensitive and derogatory
name for these people, whatever their race or religion

So how *would* you refer to Muslims/Arabs/Jordanians if you were making
your point to a large crowd of people in Bradford TOG?

I bet you wouldn't refer to them as 'Ragheads' face to face would you?

Feel free to take this second opportunity to answer this question.

  18. Yes. It's just interesting to see *who* objects and *why*.

Hence, I suppose, the new Red Cross/Crescent logo due this year.
