On the footage I saw (27/12) of supply pallets being unloaded they were
marked with a the Red Crescent.

ITYWF the cross/crescent are the same organisation.

Why hasn't Al Qaeda claimed responsibility yet?
Is Dubya about to bomb Indonesia to discourage it
    from repeating the atrocity?

  5. I've always found the religious nature of most relief organisations rather
worrying. Is the secular world so unable to get off its arse and make a
difference without the involvement of the church (or similar) ? What would
be the approach of the likes of Islamic Relief if humanitarian aid were
only required in non-Islamic areas (would they shut up shop, or stay
    involved?)

Or is it all just a legacy throwback? I notice even the Red Cross is
looking at establishing a new name/symbol with non-religious context
(the Red Diamond), and humanitarian aid is just that, no religion involved.

Not that it really matters to the poor fuckers on the ground, mind.

It didn't wind me up just wanted to head off the inevitable, unspoken,
chorus of "that's a good point' from the hard of thinking.

However, a bit disappointing that TOG can't come with a more imaginative
    form of deregotary remark.

Now here's a thought. Indonesia, the worst-hit country, is Muslim,
right? So far all the main donations seem to have come from Christian
    countries.

Has anyone heard of a Muslim charity relief programme? Is, for example,
the Red Crescent doing anything? And how much has been donated by the
    wealthy ragheads?

    Just a thought.[/QUOTE]

  9. Well, that's fine then. I was just ruminating that I hadn't heard a
single thing about the Muslim relief, and was wondering why not.

  11. We've done this before. There's a difference between race and religion,
    you know.

Making a derogatory remark (even in jest) about someone's religion is a
    long way from being racist.

For example, which race would someone be insulting if he dropped a
    remark about "Those robed-up Jesus-creepers"?

Think carefully before you answer ;-)

But he is right though Si. Although he does rather miss the point that
those best placed to offer support are in the main yer richer more
developed western industrialised and slightly christian countries.

I wannna know what the fucking 4 by 2s are doing to help there muslim
    bruvvers and sisters.

    Yes and no.

Poison ally, like you, I don't really give a shit about anyone or
anything else as long as it doesn't affect me that much but speaking as
a mother it just wrenches my balls off when something like this happens
and a 100,000 innocent kiddies die in an instant. Sort of brings it
home all dramatic like it does. Snot gonna stop me riding me bike
    though.

  16. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
I've noticed plenty of times in the past that the Western media tends to
mention Red Cross involvement and mostly ignore Red Crescent
    participation in disaster areas.

  17. How much has the Vatican donated from it's *own* coffers?

    Does that help?

  19. Yes, that seems to be the case. I didn't actually know that Red
Cross/Red Crescent were the same organisation until sweller mentioned
    it.
