long shot i know, but is anyone getting rid, or know someone getting rid of
a workbench of the type you find in old fassioned car repair garages, back
when they actually repaired things rather than just fitting new parts.

Made of steel, usually a big heavy duty vise on one side, encrusted with 50
years of oil, grease and other shit, and weighing a fucking ton.

Moving into a new place this week, and it has a garage so i can put all my
tools in it that are stored at my parents, but one thing i don't have is a
good workbench suitable for beating the shit out of a bit of machenary with
a lump hammer all day long, welding, cutting, shaping metal on etc without
    catching fire or falling appart.

being a tight arse i'm after one as cheap as poss, but i guess the pikeys
will be after them too, so i'll have to pay a bit more than scrap value, i'm
in nottingham, but can travel a reasonable distance, and have atrailer to
    collect one on.

  2. FFS, make one out of 2" angle iron and it'll be heavy enough.

Keep an eye on your local auction houses. There are always workshops
going bust and the bailiffs auction off the contents.

I have picked up some nice kit for next to buggerall that way over the
years, but you need free time on weeksdays to turn up and bid.

I would suggest if you've got the skills to use one, you've got the
    skills to make one.

could make one, but dont really want to, hassle of buying the steel, buying
a vise that i wont break which wont be cheap to get new, so would rather get
a complete bench if i can, but of course i dunno what kind of prices one
    would go for.

cheers for the suggestion about auctions crn, got time weekdays to go to
them, so just need to find my local one, im on the notts/derby border, so
    should have a few nearby.

  9. Probably worth asking on your local Freecycle.

Most auctioneers nowadays have a catalogue subscription scheme, some put
    their catalogues on the net.
Yellow pages is your friend, you may have to cast your net out to maybe
50 miles to find what you want quickly.

Good for welding and light fabrication Hog, but they're a bit flimsy for
anything heavy. Fit a **** off big vice to one end and it'll fall over and
you definitely wouldn't want to be weilding a big hammer on it unless you
wanted a dead bench before the packaging had been binned.

We considered one to use as a paint mixing desk but then came to the
realisation that it wouldn't stand up to lots of solvent abuse, so we stuck
    to what we've got.

I bought my huge 6" jaw Record vice from a mate who helped clear out an
old foundry in town, it cost me 20 quid. My workbench came home in the
back of a VW Golf[1] after it was given to me by a customer in W.
London who was clearing out an old engineering shop to move his bike
    business into.

[1] built on a Golf floorpan, believe it or not
