it's quite a weird drug effect - you don't actually feel as if you've
taken anything, but any anxiety you might have had just seems to slip
your mind.
I think my betas may be naturally blocked.

2. I've heard they're a bit of a giggle for a weekend.
They turned me into a zombie when I was put on them to try and stop the
migraines (propranolol).

Which is why I refused to take them when I turned into a sugar-mong.
Especially as I didn't actually need them (BP is 120/80 even when I'm
stressed..)

They're a 'banned substance' in professional snooker.

Sounds just like Morphine.
Ah well, there's a big difference between feeling like your mental
processes are still sound and them actually being so. This may be
where BBs differ from opiates, in that the latter make you feel like
you're totally in control and able to out-think anyone about anything,
whilst not actually making it the case :)

5. It didn't with me. It was like someone had draped a wet cotton blanket
over my brain and nothing was working. I stopped taking them after I
had a day of trying to do a reasonably complex network operation (that
normally I could have done in my sleep) and I was having to read the
manual 4 times to remember how to do it.

But it affects different people in different ways - my mother was on
the same stuff (Propranolol) for her blood pressure and it just made
her feel a bit sleepy with no other side effects.

6. It's part of the 'standard treatment' along with statins (which I also
don't need - my cholesterol and triglyceride levels are both on the low
side of normal despite having a reasonably high-fat diet).

Since then the GP practice has a new diabetic nurse who recognises that
you actually need to look at each patients needs rather than trying to
apply the NICE recommendations on a blanket basis.

I don't get anxious in the conventional sense, before interviews; I get
sort of super-confident, which is just as bad, if not worse. Something
to just gently even me out would be a good thing, possibly.
interviews never bother me[1] - but giving presentations (particularly
ones where I didn't have 100% input into their creation) in front of
medium sized groups of people, some of which I know to be hostile to
my intentions, does make a bit nervous. This is where BBs help a lot.
I've seen a videos of myself giving a presentation and then doing a
question and answer session afterward, both with beta blockers and
without. "without", I'm visibly a lot more nervous, and speak quicker;
"with", I still appear to be in control of my mental faculties but the
delivery and style are much smoother and professional.

[1] I think maybe because of all the job interviews I've ever done,
I've only ever not got the job twice.

What!!

Having earned my living from communicating with groups both large and
small for decades I can only say that Adrenaline is the drug of choice
for such situations. Fight or flight mate, either you stay and do
battle with the cunts and win or you leave quietly by the back door.

It's barely fucking regeristing. You can get it much higher than that
if you put a bit of fucking effort into it.

Last year, I appeared to have really high blood pressure (160 ish)
whenever it was taken by the doctor

We settled on them giving me a calibrated blood pressure monitor which I
took several measurements every day for two weeks

.... perfectly normal (well 120-130/80-90)

Doc finally concluded that I had white coat syndrome
