Quite - I claimed that most violent crimes /involving fatalities/ are
    commited with a motor car.

(Mind you - I can see how you might have interpreted it differently)
Well, I did provide statistical support for the claim I actually
    made..

Yep. So adequate (i.e. much higher) levels of enforcement are called
    for.
Like, say, letting off a gun in a public place?

Perhaps they should put a policeman there using his judgement. Hell, just
park a police car there for an hour a day, that'd slow the traffic down
    enough.

Of course, think about where speed cameras usually are. Outside schools?
    No! On trunk roads? Yes!

If cameras were outside schools, they'd have a lot more public support
(until they realise that they'd be taking photos of the kids!
    PAEDOPHILES!!!! BURN BURN BURN!)

In that case legislate them off the road and make it safer for everyone.
It does to me. I couldn't give a **** how anyone else views their
safety, as long as I come out ok. Motoring is a risk, take precautions
or die. If you want to be safe, don't mess about near roads. All these
things will save more lives than cuting speed limits imo.
Where can I see the figures relating to this statement, because I
    believe it to be bullshit.

This certainly happened 15 years ago. We were taught the laws of the road
(ride on the left, signal, stop at red lights, dont ride on pavements,
etc) too. Sadly many cyclists, adults and kids alike, blatently ignore
traffic laws and endanger themselves and others.
The law is not neccersarilly right. Isn't it still legal to shoot a
welshman in chester on a Friday if you're carrying a pig? Homosexuality
certainly wasn't legal as little as 50 years ago.
Perhaps kids should be forced to ride 10 miles per week, on the road. As
well as cutting obesity, when they do become drivers, they'll have more
    respect for cyclists.
It's quite funny when nothing goes wrong, and at the average speed of the
M6, if something does go wrong it's hardly serious.
1900: There seems to be a substantial minority of people trying to allow
    women the vote
1950: There seems to be a substantial minority of people trying to
legalise the long lost fight against baning of homosexuality
Of course in the case of a motorway the fastest users are the ones without
the safety cage, and aside from them there are no cyclists or pedestrians.
    We can always hope.

Bullshit. Someone's got their figures wrong. I'd love to see you try to
stop a Cortina Mk1 in original trim, on crossplys and with drums all
    round[1], from 70mph in 60 yards.

[1] This is how they were in the 60s when the speed limit was set.

I did maths at school and I found it boring, but then I prefer to get
out there and try things for myself, not sit at a desk ponificating.

  15. And who cares about anybody you kill. Right.
Fully cited in Risk (Adams, 1995), or you can google for "risk
compensation" especially in combination with "Isles report", Muich
taxi drivers and ABS, Oslo taxi drivers and ABS.

I thought you were talking about two cyclists. I hadn't heard of the
incident before it came up here.

Mind you, a trailer behind a pushbike is possibly the most dangerous way
    available to transport your offspring.

  20. I see them all the time, but then I travel via a busy station.
Then cameras are Good Thing, since the paperwork is all done by
    civilians.
You do know why the paperwork and rules of evidence are there, don't
you? Birmingham Six, Guildford Four is not a football score.
Where I live we have coppers on bikes or foot patrol. Much better.
